Need to know more about your combo. Generally, long-tubes are for more top-end friendly engines that can flow air. On engines that flow less, you'll give up some power down low. Shorties should give a power gain over stock at all RPM, regardless of engine combo. Keep in mind that they both run different X or H-pipes.

Long tubes give the air more time to cool off and condence before all 4 ports come together. plus equal lentgh long tubes are a heck of alot easier to work around then equal length shorty's.

This is just entirely untrue. Long tubes will produce more midrange torque than shorties ever would...and they flow better up top. If you want to increase area under both power curves (HP and TQ) then long tubes are the only way to go. And of course they flow better up top too.

Long Tubes are outlawed in the slower NMRA classes for a reason!

Longtubes give an advantage in the low-mid range.

However, where most people race (3,500+) the shorties are right there with longtubes. Some have even seen 'peak' gains with shorties above a longtube combination. Now peak doesn't mean much

Generally speaking, there is not a big difference at the track, over longtubes vs. shorties.

I took out my old 172,000 mile engine with a new 306, ported my performer lower professionally by tmoss, and added longtubes over my dented shorty primaries and partly crushed old H-pipe, and gained 1.3 mph, the equivalent of 13 hp.

Take that for what you will...

If starting from scratch, and you got the extra dough, go with longtubes, unless you have emission standards to keep up with.
