Mach 460. Can the 6x9 in rear be upgraded to a better speaker?

So if Mach 460 is so good why can't I adjust the bass bast 1/3 without serious distortion? My ols Monsoon blew this out of the water.

Am I just to picky or are all of them like this? It almost sounds like the phase is off on all 4 woofers.

Somethings wrong with your system. I can crank way past 1/3 even with heavy bass lines without distortion.

The impedance of the factory drivers is 6 ohms. You drop 4 ohm drivers in your car and your system will sound like ass since the amps weren't designed to drive anything less than 6 ohms. You have to gut the whole system and start over. After contemplating this I thought it would be best to just live with the Mach 460. Yes, it sounds like **** but I'm not about to spend $2k+ on a whole new stereo system.

wtf is with "premium" sound systems using funky impedances? Bose uses a completely off impedance like 1.578324 or something similarly crazy.

I really like the Mach460 for stock but eventually it is coming out, but only when I can afford to upgrade head unit, speakers, and amps together. I don't want a crippled system and I don't like having empty speaker holes.

Bose uses really low load levels so ther amps don't need to be massive. The best way to be efficent is with low impedance speakers.

What are you talking about...the mach 460 stereo was rated the best stock stereo in a car under $25,000 by car and driver.

Seriuosly its nothing special. A 4 channel amp, some speaker replacements, and a new headunit does WONDERS for the car.

If the stock speakers are 6ohm's and you add 4ohm speakers you wil lbe increasing the wattage output of the amps.. Less resistance more power! Does that translate to better sound quality? not always....will they go louder? yes.. But the amps will create more heat! My feeling is if your going to upgrade just the speakers its not worth it.. You really need to do the whole system over. But this is just my .02
I think the stereo sounds good for stock though but lacks bottom end due to that rear speaker enclosure!

amp clipping could be a big problem going from 6-4, the speakers would by drawing more power than the amp could produce and thus, dead amp. That's how it works in guitars amplifiers at least, which aren't 12 volt but I imagine they work about the same.

Just add a seperate "true" subwoofer to your system. I used to have 15" sub with 450W amp in the trunk, and it sound really good. The MACH 460 is pretty good at mid-bass and up since the 6x8's are woofers and not "subwoofers." It just needs a little down low. The easiest solution is to just add a subwoofer and amp.

Here is the connector info on the rear amps from my 2000 GT (should be the same for all years though)

I simply made my own converter from the high level amp speaker outputs to a line level for my amp.

I do not use it anymore since the 15" sub box was huge, but it use to work really well I just did not have much trunk space.

If you go to lower ohm speakers you are drawing more current at the same voltage levels, V=I*R -> I=V/R. So, at the same voltage level as before you are suppling more power, P=V*I. This is not always a bad thing "IF" the amp was designed for it. Most high quality amps are setup for this to some extent. Going with a lower ohm speaker causes 2 things.

1) More distortion: this an electronics thing, but just remember that you cannot get something for nothing. More power at the same voltage means more distortion. However, when it comes to low frequencies this is not that big of a deal. You will notice it more in mid to high freq.

2) More Heat: this comes from the increased power ouput that is required. What may happen is that if you turn your system up too high then you can burn out the electronics. However, you will not need to turn the system up as much as before since at lower voltage levels you are suppling more power. You are just screwed when you get greedy.

so what would happen if you found some after market 6ohm speakers. you think they would perform any better. cause mine seem to flutter and i think one of the tweeters is blown cause it sounds like a squeek sometimes. its not the car cause when i turn off the radio it goes away.

interesting isn't it. like the others i don't want to change the h/u just looking for better sound.
