I am tired of flowmasters. I have the American Thunder catback. Was wondering if the magna flow exhaust setup for a 89 coupe is loud at all? How does it compare to the magnaflow setup in loudness at idle and wot? Any other info appreciated or idea anyone has about other exhausts.

Magnaflow on my '93 LX 5.0

Nice and smooth, unique idle (maybe similar to BORLA) and calm, yet throaty under normal acceleration.

WOT, WOW! I have had some fun scaring away some annoying ricers and have surprised some Flowmaster owners - it normally sounds so mellow and laid back, but BAM when you step on it -growls nicely.

Also, I like how there aren't any issues with droning at coasting speeds (45-75) that I have heard in some Flowmaster cars.

What he said I love it, if I have to take my kids anywhere it can be quiet(good for johnny law too) but if I want to let people know that I mean business it screams like a banshee, whatever a banshee sounds like

Bottom Line......LOVE IT!!!

What's the magnaflow catback cost for an LX? Are the tailpipes aluminized, or polished stainless?

I payed about $500 total for mine about 3 yrs ago. I think the tails are different now though, the nice shiney stainless stops before it gets behind the wheels(see pic) Sound wise....i love the sound at WOT

The setup you have is the one I think I am going to install on my car. Did you do the work yourself and if so how was installing the cat backs.... Also what headers are you using?

Thanks

I too got mine from Partshopper with the rebate and cheap shipping

Also, the entire thing is stainless steel, so no rusting like the Flowmasters - limited lifetime warranty too - only the pipes are polished though, although the mufflers were nice and shiny when I got them

Install was OK...just have a saw ready and a good jack...if you can jack it up so the suspension hangs down a little, moving the pipes around over it is a lot easier. It took 3 friends and I about 3 hours to do it, but we had a bad jack (not tall enough, had to find random wood to increase lift height) and a REALLY bad saw that took forever to get thru the pipes.

It was well worth the effort though!

I have Hedman headers from a previous owner...crappy, rusted...I am going to replace with BBK long tubes and BBK H-Pipe.

I did do all the work myself, very easy install, no welding, one tip I'd give is leave everything loose when you bolt it up so you can adjust everything so you only have to line it up once....i have to goto work now, but I'd be glad to give you a ton of tips later. You definately will not be sorry with your choice

I forgot to tell you I have ford racing ceramic coated headers

Not sure what Macs look like...but have a plate that goes over rounded end of pipe, pipe slightly goes over mid/h pipe, then bolts go thru plate, tightening makes it all nice and snug...I am assuming that is the "ball and socket" concept too.

I appologize for sort of moving this topic off base, but I think pple will still benefit. Not know a lot about exhausts or anything for that matter, I just realized how expensive installing the exhuast system can be. If I purchase the magnaflow cat backs can they be installed onto an existing mustang 5.0 system, or do you need to buy all the catalytic converter stuff and H/X pipe stuff. I would like to do my exhaust in parts to soften the expense a little. Maybe purchase and install the cat backs, next the X pipe, and then the headers...Is this possible?

Thanks again.

Good question...

You sound like me. I am on a budget (college and all), so I only did the catback now on my stock setup. I will add BBK components from front to the Magnaflow setup at a later date.

I used to Install exhaust, yes you can do it in stages. I did my cat back first, then headers, then the H-pipe. As for the sound guys, I'm still a flowmaster guy, sorry
