I have a 67 mustang coupe which I want to install tri-y headers on which I know i have to buy a power steering bracket for. I would like to know if they are pretty simple to install or Im I going to have trouble? I also want to get a new exhaust system but cant choose between flowmaster and magnaflow. I want something that sounds really powerfull and its legal to drive in the streets but not too obnoxious. I heard about the delta flow by flowmaster and I know there good performance wise but how do they sound. And magnaflow I went to their website and they have very good comments on their systems so which one would you go for? Also one more question, this is my first time ever buying a exhaust system so whats the difference between the 2.5" tubing and the 3" tubing. what do you guys recommend for me?

0.5" :p

Seriously though. Some people like the sound of Flowmasters while others say they have an obnoxious drone at certain speeds. Magnaflows are straight- through instead of baffled yet they are quieter. I'll be changing to them from Flowmasters.

I just changed to the round magnaflows after using flowmaster for a while. I run 1 3/4" longtubes and an x pipe and turndowns on the end of the muffs, with 11:1 compression. The flowmasters were very raspy and didn't have much tone at idle. The magnaflows somehow manage to be quieter and a have a much better tone. They are still very loud, but most of the rasp is gone, they still drone (probably due to no tailpipes), overall I like them better than the flows.

Unless you have some serious ponies under the hood foget the 3". I had 3" on my car with Flowmasters and it was stupid loud all the time. I think 2.5" it good for 400-500hp. Flowmasters do have a loud drone around 2000rpm. But I still love that Flowmaster sound.

I have to vote for Magnaflow because back in the 80's while I was in high school I cut my tailpipes off and the I couldnt take the drone, especially with all the 80's rock I was listening to...I have the 2.5" stainless kit and I could sit in my car all day listening to it because at idle it sounds aggresive but when you gert into it it soundds like a newer car with that x pipe. Mine is Supercharged and I'm sure that makes some differents in tone??? but you'd love it Im sure.

Both claim to have a performance edge, they cannot both be right about that. You can see straight through a Magnaflow, even the rectangular ones, so I cannot see a baffled muff being less restrictive than that.

As far as pipe size...a 2.5 should suffice for up to 400 cubes and 6,000RPM. If you have more displacement than that AND intend to wind it higher then look into a 3.0.

As far as sound...the only difference is a matter of preference, so there is no "right" answer. Personally speaking, Magnaflows have the best combination of loudness at WOT and mellowness at idle or low RPM cruise.

Another vote for Magnaflow.
My car with full length headers and the 2.5" SS magnaflow system with X pipe sounds great. At idle the car has a nice mellow rumble not to loud.
No perceptible drone at cruising speeds...
However when you mash the pedal..Katy bar the door it sounds mean :nice:
As far as 2.5" vs 3":
I think that you will find that the general consensus is the 2.5" is more than adequate for most of our applications.

I have the 2 1/2 system on my 66 and love it. Here is something to help you make up your mind. You need to add coupon code Ebay4E in order to get the special price.

I recently went thru the same decision process for my 68 with 347 & long tube Hookers. I decided on 2.5" with Flowmaster 50 series and have zero regrets. The sound levels at idle and crusing speed is perfect, but when you mash the go pedal it is simply awesome sounding. My friends were really surprised at how the sound comes alive under WOT versus cruisng and idle speed. Can't say anything bad about Magnaflows, I was giving them a hard look especially with the polished stainless. Feedback from this board and the price from a local Flowmaster dealer/installer ($525 complete and custom installed from headers back) helped make my decision.

Here is a great comparison to the magnaflows... I have a similar setup with a 289 w/ hooker long tubes, 2.5 tubing w/ x-pipe and flowmaster deltaflow 50's. This video is from idle to WOT:

I like the sound of my Flowmasters... but I have never owned magnaflows so my experience would be limited. Anyway, it is going to come down to your preference...

i agree, just a matter of preference, imo you really can't go wrong,:D as lets face it, SBF's just have a kicka$$ sound with about any decent muffler...right?

Agreed.

Hell they sound fine with any cheap ass muffler too. I've got some cherry bombs, $20 mufflers on mine and I think it sounds pretty damn good. Haven't gotten around to upgrading to magnaflows yet.

3" is loud. Thats what I used to have. I now have a 2.5" with an X-pipe but I still used the 3" muffler with 2.5" ends welded on it. And it's still ridiculously loud. But all the other 2.5's I heard are not as loud as mine.
