If you want raspy, as in metallic, go with the Flowmaster 40s.
Better yet, take your car to a quality muff shop and they can clamp different brands on for you to hear before you buy and get them welded up. As has been said, it is all about personal preference.
I think your cam is what gives each car a different sound. I have flowmaster 50's and they sounded a little weak at idle. When I put a bigger cam in it now sounds very aggressive at idle but in a good way.
I have the 2 1/2 system on my 66 and love it. Here is something to help you make up your mind. You need to add coupon code Ebay4E in order to get the special price.
I run magnaflows. I always have. I went bassani's on my 03 cobra, simply put, it was a deal I could not refuse But on my 97 vert, and now my 65, Magna all the way. I love the sound, no drone, and everybody and their mother has Flowmasters.
I am going to Magnaflow to quite my exhaust, also Joe Sherman (yes the famous engine guru) has said he uses magnaflow because it was the only mufflers that actually made more HP than open pipes in dyno tests.
Also I want QUIET, unlike my current flowtech afterburners which wake the dead!
I am a dealer for both flowmaster and magnaflow. i can tell you...hands down, the maggies are the better built muffler here. They are usually a tad quieter than a 40 series flowmaster, but the materials, the welds, everything about them is 100% better than flowmasters.
