manual rack?

ok, so i keep reading about people switching to a manual rack. that is referring to a car with no power steering correct? we had a '80 mustang when i was a kid that didn't have power steering, it was a 2.3 and it didn't turn that great. can't imagine running a v-8 with no power steering. what gives? are they still easy to turn for DD car or not recommended? i won't be doing any 1/4 mile racin', goin' for the twisty stuff

Some people like the feel of a manual rack for the twisties cause it allows you to "feel" the road more, i however like the feel of PS when im driving and just went with a short turn rack. 1 turn to lock in both directions. Makes quick turning a breeze.

wow, that's quick steering! does it give you any "issue" on the street? what kind of rack is that? did you have any problems with keeping the power steering? i was getting the impression that they were switching to manual because of aftermarket k-member fitment issues.

the other issue for me is that my wife will probably spend some time behind the wheel and if there is no power steering i'll never hear the end of it

If your wife is going to drive it leave the power steering. You are right in guessing you will never hear the end of it and you will most likley have to put the power steering back, that or she will just never want to drive it. While driving you wont be able to really notice the difference, but when it comes to sharp turning at low speed (ie. parking) no power steering becomes a serious pain. Is it manageble? Of course, but not desireable.

I have a manual rack with skinnies and it's fine but my car sees 90% track, 10% street. If it's a DD don't ditch the PS. I miss the PS, it was so much nicer to drive.

I have skinnies on the front of my car with a 351w in it and it's not that bad to drive. I like not having a power steering pump dragging the engine down when turning at idle, also it is alot cleaner under the hood and much easier to work on. No regrets here.

Go with Sn95 rack. It's a little stiffer so it feels more like a manual rack, but obviously it's still power.

The fox rack is too light...feels like i am driving a caddy with 1 finger. This winter, my main project is an 03/04 cobra steering rack swap

are they a direct bolt in? does it need to be a v-8 car?

they have a different spline than the foxes and require a custom steering shaft (MM Sells one for $219)

And you can also use MM bumpsteer kit for using the sn95 rack on your fox as well.

Yes, much better feel. I owned a 03gt for 5 years and loved the way the steering felt. It was just tighter and felt stable at speed and on the highway...but still easy to turn.

I do not know if the v6s have the same rack as the gt. I guess you could compare parts store numbers. The 03/04 cobra rack is the choice rack, but the other v8 racks are just as good.

You will need some parts. You need the hybrid shaft from mm, and either swap to fox tie rod inners and liters, or use the sn95 bump steer kit from mm
