i just put on march pulleys for a v-belt yesterday and now my alternator pulley is gold. the cone that goes on the pulley is still silver. how did this happen? i put on a new alternator and it squeeked so i thought it might be the bearings so i took that one back and got another one but it still does the same thing. my car kept breaking belts so i replaced my water pump and it has stopped breaking belts but on my alternator i can see little black specks from the belt. also when i am driving it i sometimes smell burnt rubber. when i start my car it will squeel and it will do it worse when i turn on my electric fan. the alternator is a rebuilt one from a 94 mustang. i dont understand how just my march alternator pulley turned gold? also do u think i can return it for another one? thanks

is it lined up correctly sounds like its not. if its smells like rubber is burning check to see if it wearing out on one side or maybe its just too tight.

well i am using all of the same brackets for it and they appear to be lined up. i dont understand what would turn the pulley that color though, i think it might be the clear coat that was on them.

is it getting hot. check to see if it getting to hot from friction if its binding then that would cause it to burn the clear coat off. I would imagine. take a pic and post it so we could see the color.

i dont have my digital camer with me so i cant get a pic. i can see where some of the clear coat has come off and that is still the silver color. the cone that goes onto the pulley is fine. i was thinking it might have gotten to hot to but wouldnt the cone be the same then too?

that would depend on how hot and how long it was getting hot for I would guess. but if the clear coat is comming of I would still think something is out of wack. or the clear coat was aplied correctly thats also a posibilty.

again that would depend on if somting is out of line first I would check to make sure that the belt is now wearing anywhere then I would call them and tell them whats going on. they might I never used them before but if this is the second one they might tell you that something is wrong with your car. you can try it what doyou got to loose. its already gold.

Either the pulley is slipping on the alt., the belt is slipping on the pulley, or your alt. is locked up. Extreme heat will turn it gold just like it does headers that are chrome plated.
