Mass air problems

Hello

I have a 1987 mustang with a mass air conversion from Pro-flow (1992). The car runs not well at idle, its bump up and down +/- 100 rpm and smells like hell ...unburend feul. (If the engine is cold it runs perfect but after 5 min. it runs bad as discribed above)

The follow thinks i have did to get rid of the problem
- new IAC
- new TPS
- new O2 sensors
- new distributor cap and rotor

After this the computer gives no codes .....its passes the KOEO and KOER test!!!! But the car runs at idle still bad!!!

When i unplug the mass air it runs perfect. I know that when you unplug the mass air the car goes in "Limp" mode and shuts off several sensors.

My quenstion is ....... can it be that the the mass is broken. I have treid an other mass air sensor but is was not the same type. I read at this forum that the mass air must be calibrated at the size of the injectors (still stock). And the mass air sensors i have treid is of a cobra!!!!

The problem i have is that i live in Holland and over here nobody can calibrat the Mass air sensor.

Does somebody know were i can buy a new mass air sensor of the same type(Pro flow) without the tube where it's bolt on????

Hello FfH,

The cobra MAF transfer curve is a bit different from the GT transfer curve as I recall (I think it goes more astray at higher volume-events though).

Other than getting a new aftermarket meter or recalibration from PMAS, the only things I could suggest are to get either:

A stock 55mm Fox GT meter. They sell for pretty cheap when used (shipping not withstanding).

Or get a 70 MM 94-95 GT MAF, and either use the adapters the guys on here like to use, or cut the flange off.

I'm sure when Vristang and the other MAF gurus see your thread, they will be able to help.

A few years back , my car (1993 GT Mustang) was running bad and would run fine when I unplugged the MAF Sensor as you had stated. It was a bad MAF sensor.

Are runnning a Cobra sensor from a 1993? And with what MAF Meter?
When you tried the other sensor, what where the results?

If you have a 93 cobra sensor, your sensor is for 24 lb. injectors, that's why your getting the fuel smell and running rich.

I would get rid of the cobra sensor and go with a Granatelli MAF set-up calibrated for your injectors, 19 lb . They have one for stock intake and cold air intake. If your not sure, call the tech person at Summit Racing. They are very helpfull. You will see a big difference in the way your car runs. Your better off getting the complete package of sensor and meter instead of trying to find a sensor only or calibrate the one you have for your meter.. Link is below for Summit Racing.

Ford doesn't calibrate MAF's for any given injector. However, if we desire to think like that, the Cobra MAF would be calibrated for 19's (the cobra computer is what does the 'calibration' for 24's).

Congrats on finding a Mustang in Holland!

Just so we are all on the same page...
What MAF meter are you using? Is it calibrated for your injector/ecu?


Also, some of the oversees cars had some interesting ecu's. Would you mind pulling the ecu from the kick panel, in order to verify your ecu?
There is the possibility that you have an ecu that we have never seen here in the lower 48.

Depending on what ecu you have, the 94-95 Cobra MAF/MAS setup should work... Again, that is assuming you have a typical A9* series computer...

You are correct, disconnecting the MAF doesn't prove that the sensor is the problem.


Have you made any performance modifications to the car?



If you need clarification, just ask... I tend to talk in code, then add into that a language barrier... and things could get pretty confusing...

You're right Hissin50.
Ford MAF Sensors are not calibrated for any given injector.
My fault.
I was thinking in terms of the MAF Meter doing the calibration with a sample tube as C&L does.
My bad.

I'd still go with the PRO-M MAF sensor set-up and be done with it!
