IIRC there is about 2" or more beneath the speaker. And there is a little room between the speaker and the dash pad. I have a set of Pioneer 2 way 3.5" speakers in the dash and they fit with plenty of room to spare. I cant imagine why you would have problems ewith any 3.5" speaker there.

I'm not sure if it applies to our cars or not (I plan to find out soon), but 4" speakers may fit in there as well. I remember my '82 EXP having 3 1/2" openings and I was able to fit a Rockford Fosgate 4" component in there with no modifications. From what I can tell, the only issue may be speaker depth.

i put some 75 watt 3.5's in my dash, they were something like 2 and 1/4 inch high with huge (3 and 1/4 inch diam.) magnets, they press against the air ducting behind the speakers and stick out a teency bit, but when i screwed the flanges down they bent into place no prob. and no issues with the sound from them
