Maybe ditching the turbo

Well after sitting for 2 years and not driving my car I am ready to just sell everything. The setup is totally done aside from needing a mass air meter which is another 250 bucks. However, it just wont run right and I cannot afford to get it tuned and have someone monkey with it. It will start right up, but wont stay running without throttle. Ive driven around the block a couple times, but that is it. I love turbos and want to have a running turbo mustang more than anything, but its to the point where I just want to drive the car.

What my thoughts are is if I do sell it all, I want to get a nice set of heads instead. I already have a GT40 intake and trick flow stage 1 cam. I was wondering what you guys think would be my best bet for matching heads to that combo. I'm sure trick flows would work well, but would afrs or victor jrs work better?

Trust me, its going to suck going from almost having 500-600rwhp to around 300rwhp, but I just want to drive it and have it be reliable. I was also considering possibly getting a different cam because I would like it to be a bit more aggressibe. My tfs never sounded too mean so what would be a good cam option?

If anyone may be interested in any turbo stuff let me know. It would be everything: Hot side, cold side, turbo, intercooler, injectors, v-bands, silicones etc. The kit itself was custom made by rio95 and myself and used to be on rio car along with his 62mm turbo and ran 11.5 at 126 mph. I have a T70 so its got potential to make some serious power. My turbo has never been used aside from running in the driveway and twice around the block.

Any and all thoughts and input is appreciated.:nice:

I feel your pain. and I much rather a running car than a dead car but if 250 bucks will get you going man you can get that together man

250 bucks then I cross my fingers and hope I can figure out why it runs like garbage. Then after I get it halfway running I have to spend 5-600 bucks on a dyno tune so I am still almost 1,000 dollars away. That's whats frustrating.

i know the feeling tho I have been i the same boat for a 3yr build that i went overboard with. Time and Money have been huge factors in those years but it will hopefully pay off. and everytime I get ahead its another grand fine.

300hp and driving it is better than "all the hp in the world" sitting in the garage. ;)

Maybe some hella ported GT40's? I would say that Thumper (Is he even still around?) could do up a nice set for you. Maybe some Eddy's or small AFR's would fit the bill.

Bigger is not always better.

that was one of the reasons why i bent back to na. with the kb, things never worked right and then the motor started losing oil, and i decided forced induction was not worth it.

with the money from selling the turbo, you can set yourself up with a sweet na combo

Man! What a typical turbo mustang guy, backing out before its even done. You must be the first person to ever do this. haha

Just kidding. Driving a 300hp car is way better than looking at a non-finished turbo mustang.

You know that even if you got your car running with the turbo, you'd need a clutch and then probably break your tranny and then you car would be really sitting for awhile. If only we had unlimited funds, right? With your all motor set-up, you could spend 200 on a clutch and be just fine and not have to worry about it. All these things are why I suggested going NA the other day. It sure does suck that we came so far and even drove it around the block just to back out in the end, but once again, financially it makes since to just go back to NA since you can probably do so without any additional cost.

I can't believe you haven't sold this yet. This will be a great deal for someone and be better for you at this point in time.

I just thought I'd rant a bit!

It's for that very reason I decided to go with a megasquirt setup and tune it myself. For less than $500 you can get a wideband and complete MSI/MS2 setup and do the tuning at your own pace (which is very easy I might add). Hell, after selling your MAF sensor your likely to be able to get it done for less than $300!!! At this point in time, I'd be confident enough with my megasquirt setup to drive it cross country! With the exception of a few hiccups (my own fault) along the way, it's been greatly reliable.

Then again, if it's been sitting for 2 years….it sounds like you've lost complete interest in it…and dare I say you may just be better off selling it altogether and finding a different stang. Seriously, I can't imagine letting mine sit that long! It's hard enough not driving her through the winter.

I havent really lost interest in the car, but its to the point where it doesnt even feel like I own a Mustang. The idea of selling it all, getting a nice set of heads, and driving it sounds like a new wave of excitement. No, I'm not going to sell the whole car off.

My plan is to get a nice set of heads and hopefully pull some high 12 second passes off then next year get a Procharger and put down around 500 rwhp.

The other reason it doesnt bother me that much is because when I did the turbo I also upgraded alot of other things such as, painted all the accessories, battery in trunk, hid wires and fuse box, new radiator and overflow, new balancer, new water pump, new power steering pump, 255 fuel pump, fuel pressure regulater, oil separator, valve covers, plug wires, wideband, etc etc. So you see there are alot of other things that I make me feel like I didnt completely lose 2 years but yeah it still sucks.

I cant believe no one has bought it yet. It really is a sweet kit.

Well I am really having a hard time deciding what I want to do. I am having second thoughts about selling my turbo stuff just because I have so much time into it and I want a turbo mustang. However, I there is a good chance that the problems its having with not running well are linked to the motor not being put togther right when I did the h/c/i a couple years ago. Before I started the turbo project it would shut off at stoplights and it never ran the #s at the track. The car was dialed in well before when I had just bolt ons and ran a 14.2 consistently then I did the gt40 intake, tfs stage 1, and milled the E7s and it wouldnt run any faster. So I think the tune issue is probably due to the motor not being right. That is the main reason I want to sell the turbo stuff and gets heads because that way I know it will be put back together correctly. Where as if I dont do that I could be chasing a problem and never find it beacuse its not something that could be fixed without tearing the motor down.

Tough choice....

you could trade your turbo for my victor jr heads and procharger! lol

but that's not what i would do if i were you...

i had a 95 GTS that i never could get to run right with the crap ProM on it... and i replaced everything (sensors) until the day i sold it, i bought a new stock MAF from autozone and it ran perfect. But who knows how long it would have taken to figure out if i hadn't been in a rush b/c i was selling the car. Sometimes new ideas or directions are good... but sounds like you've come so far!
I say finish this deal and then decide? tough one man!

borrow the 1000 bucks from the bank and get it tuned. heck put it on the ol VISA, your so close now to quit. You can pay it off in 10 months at 100 a month and I'm sure 100 bucks a month is worth it when you have a running turbo Mustang.

Not to mention even a H/C/I setup should be tuned or you are bound to have driveability issues.

Go ahead and finish it you know you want to.
