I read everywhere that it's for external use only. Is this for safety reasons? Does anybody ever panel mount these inside the vehicle?

There is an isolator that you install between the gauge and the pressure source when a mechanical gauge is used inside the car. It puts fuel on one side of the isolator and a non-flammable liquid on the other, so if the inside gauge leaks, there is no fire hazard.

yep you actually use antifreeze and water in the isolator, its illegal to run a mechanical fuel guage inside a car due to like stated fire hazards.

I've been using an isolator for several years (40,000 + miles) and it has not failed yet. Got this one before the electrical gauges came out. Just my experience with it.
