Metal plate in door jamb?

Long time lurker, first time poster - I'm currently sound dampening the floors of my 67 coupe, have removed the carpet, shifter, etc, but as I would also like to take out the interior quarter panels & shine them up, I'm curious as to how I can remove the metal plate in the door jamb that's shown in the picture below?

I figure if I can get that removed, I can take out the huge vent window handle screw and thereby slide off the quarter panels a bit easier ...

Also - do you guys have any tips/tricks for cleaning the gunk off floor pans? Old carpet glue, rubber sound dampening, etc? I want to get them down to the bare metal, so I can paint 'em before applying the sound dampening.

Welcome Michael.

I am curious to know how this plate is getting in your way from removing the window handle??? I don't see a relation to them.

The picture is a tad blury, but it appears to be riveted on? If that is the case then I think your only alternative toremove it is to drill the rivet and then pop rivet it back into place when you're done.

I'll have to look at my car and see if I have a piece like that.

On the other side of that metal plate on the inside, is that where the shoulder harness for the seatbelt is mounted?

I don't have one either, that and above the 1/4 window are popular spots that people use when installing shoulder belts.

mschmidt10k- If those are indeed rivets then you are going to have to do what Pak said or grind the head off. You then could replace them with bolts if you wanted to, so they could be taken off in the future if needed.

crushnut: Yeah, I had a 3-point seatbelt conversion done a while back, and they're mounted pretty much right on the other side.

pakrat: I've tried sliding the quarter panel out, but it just won't budge (enough) - seems like the massive screw from the vent window handle is in the way. I figure if I get that metal plate off, I can access the window handle screw and take that out too. But .. am I doing something completely wrong here? Should it be real easy to get the interior quarter panel off?

Thanks for the tip about grinding the rivets - I'll try that tonight.

Yeah, than that piece is not stock, it was put in as support for the belt then. Is it possible for you to show us a pick from the inside and edit it with some directional arrows like you did the blue box to show us how you are trying to remove it and in what direction you are sliding it? Have you pulled the back seat and absolutely removed all hardware holding it in place? Seems to me that with everything removed, you should be able to slide it forward and up just a tad and pull it straight towards you.

A picture might help us more, i know that they can be tricky to get out
even though it seems so simple, keep trying and you will eventualy get
it

I finally got them off - I sanded off the rivets on the metal plate, took off the plate (which had the seatbelt attaching screw through it), and, hey presto, the quarter panel slid right off. Thanks for the help, guys - appreciate it.

I am curious as to if the seatbelt attaching screw went thru the plate, then couldn't it have been unscrewed from inside or something? Like by removing a small plug or cover to reveal it. I mean, the screw has to have a head, and the head would of had to of been visible at some point. It just seems weird that one would attach it with rivets in a (semi)perminent fashion like that to begin with and no other way to remove it.

I think I'll bolt the plate back on - having to sand off rivets every time I wish to do something to the quarter panels is probably not a good idea

The seatbelt attaching screw was actually welded to the inside of the little metal plate - so there was no head that I could use to unscrew it. Which, yes, is a little bit odd.
