I've had my car since '87 and driven it all of about 2000 miles. It's further apart than its ever been (rolling, but about as disassembled as you can get, yet still be weatherproof) and I'm not sure when I'll ever get the cash to do it right (3 kids 12 thru 3). I've got a chance to trade it straight across for a '67 coupe that's in primer (couple different colors) but looks to have had been done right. The car has no motor or tranny, other than that I haven't looked at it closely enough. This guy got it from another guy that bought it and pulled the motor and tranny. I've got a 302 with '69 351w heads on the stand ready to be put into something. I've got a Liberty modified top loader, Lakewood, race disc, pressure plate, T/O bearing, fork, just need a Z-bar and a set of pedals if this car is an auto car. My best bud has the z-bar and pedals out of a '65 that he'll give to me, I'm not sure if they'll work or not. The guy that has the car now is setting up his own restoration, restomodding shop just around the corner from me, I also have a '76 F-250 I want to see if he'll take and maybe put the '67 coupe into some DP90 for me so it's all one color. I've also got a '57 9" I can put into the '67.
The thing is, I could have the '67 going a lot sooner than my '65 and I like the '67 body style better anyway. If I do do this, I'd like to eventually put an FE in it anyway and the FE won't fit in the '65 without a lot of work. Except for 1 year of the 17 I've had it, my '65 has been garage kept, so the only rust problems are from before I had it.
I'm hoping to get in good with the guy and maybe make a little extra cash working for him on the side, plus I'd have the ability to work on my own stuff in his shop, so I'd have access to a soda blaster, down draft paint booth, etc.
I think money wise, the trade might not be so great, but time wise, its better for me. As long as the condition of the car is better than mine is if I assembled it back together, I think I'll do it. I already know what to look for as I've been into these cars for 20 years.
I guess the "what do you think" question is sorta rhetorical. I'm going to do it if my heart feels right. Ultimately I think it'd be best in the long run, especially if he'll let me work for him on the side helping him out. I'll learn some more, have access to equipment I don't have to own or maintain (unless I'm maintaining it for him), and I don't have to pay insurance on the shop.
