So I'm thinking about a motor swap. The guy giving me knows more than I do and he said the 5.4 is the same (2v vs. 2v) 4.6, just a longer stroke. It's a lightning motor I'm trying to stuff in a small engine bay. I know a 32v 4.6 will fit with some mods. So is a lightning motor wider than a 2v 4.6 ? Thanx

Lightning motor virtually = 2v 4.6 in every way except the stroke.

the 5.4 is a taller deck height versino of the 4.6 just like a 351W is a taller deck height of a 302. therefore, it will be wider than a 4.6 due to the heads being higher up.

I thought the question was about the heads... But since you bring up the 302 vs 351 I have a question now. I don't hear of many people stroking a 5.4. Am I just out of the loop or is the performance gain not worth the task...or can you not stroke a 5.4? Its a 331 right? There's enough room in the 302 to make it a 347, and that seems like a pretty steep jump. I've seen the 302 stroker kits for the 4.6, but that to me seems about as much of a waste of time as going from a 302 to a 306. Is there not enough block in the 5.4 to bore out safely?

The stroke on a 5.4 is already too long. It puts too much stress on the rods as it is.

Agreed....it's bore we want to increase displacment with these motors, not stroke.

^ Yep, just get an aluminum 5.4 block and bore it out to 358 CIs . Iron block can be bored just about as much as the 4.6 iron block (not alot). And like said, they dont make strokers really, because the darn stroke is long enough as it is. And its 330 CI.
I would just get a 4.6 4V...the lighting motor isnt going to make THAT much power, the heads are the limiting factor. Now a 5.4 4V thats a different story

the benfit to gain ratio on a 5.4 swap in a gt is just not there IMO. I have don't tons of engine swaps in the past on different car and the little things you have to do to complete the swap always add up in time and $$$.

4.6 4v is what I would run if staying n/a. all the parts are availible off the shelf for the swap. I personally just think boosting the 2v is where it is at labor wise. 8-12 hours later you have plenty of power. ford does not produce a power moster 5.4. It is alot of work to put in to still loose races to 4.6L 4v's and boosted 2v's.

dude forget 5.4 2v. it's a waste of money. you'll never make the hp you are thinking.

4.6 4v is good for swap, but realize you need a lot of info. too many swaps are failing these days. the motor i just purchased came out of a 97gt. it fell on it's face @3000. it's not just a simple swap, it's tuning where it runs.

don't join the e-bay crowd. and end up selling the swap. it's hard stuff sometimes.

to make real power with a 5.4 it takes a lot of knowhow and research.

BB 5.4@3.70" = 358 cuin.

boosted 5.4 2v makes huge power at low rpm.

That's the thing. It's going to be carbed, and stuffed in a 67 mustang with a turbo. I've got the 306 turbo charged now. But I am not going to buy a 4.6,just to swap everything out, and start over. I can just get a Dart block. But with lightning getting into the 10's, it should have now problems getting me into the 10's, maybe 9's. I love the turbo because you don't have to run steep gearing. I have a c-4. And you don't spin them to the moon to make power. 6k will do 'er just fine.So bascially what I'm getting at is I need to fit this thing in here some how. If a stock motor will get me to 9's cheaper than a dart based motor, then I'll go that route. I just want to leave it at that without buying a bunch of aftermarket mod motor stuff.

you will need to purchase a carb intake for it. reichard racing makes a carb intake for 4.6 2v. you'll need adapter plates. the stock manifold is a dry intake and is incompatable with carbs. the fuel will leave suspension in the bends leaving puddles of fuel.

if you were to find a front clip from a ligtning wouldnt that be all youd need basically if you say its in a tune, is that because youre using the mustang ecu thats meant for a 2v 4.6 as opposed to the lightning ecu thats meant for a 4v 5.4l? unless im wrong.

id love to do a 5.4L 4v, 6spd swap into my stang. i do know it would be a pita and probably not even worth it, but i think a 5.4L/4v with some badass cams, and a free flowing intake/exhaust would be alot more fun to drive than a procharged 4.6 thats only quick cause its FI. and just think of a 5.4L 4V with a 75-100 shot in case you run into a pesky supra or such.

if you have any quick info or links that would be greatly appreciated.

^ Unforutunatly there are 1200RWHP supras running around on the street . Those things will run off and leave a darn 1300CC suzuki (busa) out on the highway.

I guess a twin 65MM turbo setup on a BB 5.4 4V (358 CI) with Cams and P&P heads, 8.5-1 compression, billitt steel internals, ect, would solve any supra problems LOL. That would pull just about anything.
Ha, I watched a vid on streetfire where an EVO running 42PSI, pulled a notch 347 that had 20PSI (S/C) and N20. the notch was trapping 117 in the 1/8! the evo put out like 942AWHP....just goes to show you that there is always someone faster I guess lol.

seen 2 cracked blocks that went BB on high boost. not the smartest setup for longevity. unless its strictly a track car with a big budget.

if you wanna do the lightning swap, do the lightning swap, its cake. motor mounts are the same. gotta get a tubular K member though, or and a massive cowl hood if you think you are going to run the stock intake/blower...

you might be better getting a navigator shortblock, ported 4v heads, and going kenne bell....

yeah but im in cali. youre talking about cars that wouldnt last a week here without getting pulled over and reffed. the chances of running into even a n/t supra here is highly rare. ive only seen 3 of them in my city, 2 are n/t, the 3rd i raced, 2 out of 3 times from a stop he couldnt hang. the last time was from a roll, where he held the brakes at 20mph to spool the turbo(automatic) and shot off, i didnt downshift in time, since i was like "wtf why is he riding his brakes like that" till it occured to me 2 seconds too late.

im more about a fun car with power now than a car thats only useful over 80mph. i already had a car like that that i wouldnt have even sweat that supra.

btw the ams evo is just plain badass. next to sheps drag talon and brent rau, its one of the sickest cars ive seen.

the lightning uses a roots blower. it's not on the front of the motor. you are thinking of the old blow through carbed bonnet centri from vortec.
you are tallikng about a motor that sits in the air by itself. it's taller than you will believe with a roots/lightning blow on it.

Decided not to do it. Just a PITA. Bit more than that the motor wasn't all that complete. I'd have to spend a fortune just to put it back together. Guess it's another option then.
