molding on an 86... question

hey just found some molding for my 86 thats in good shape, but its still on its car, i heard you gotta be careful takein it off or they will bow and then they are useless. anyone have any tips for me to get it off nicely and all? thanks in advance

use piano wire or windshield removal wire keep it tight on the body

Just try your best not to bend the trim as you take it off. Any bad kinks you put into it aren't going to come out. Ask me how I know.......

My buddy removed the molding on his GT and just yanked it off (this was before it was to get painted). Yeah, it curled like crazy. The trick is to remove that crappy metal strip that's on the back side and just 3M it to the door without it. It'll stay on forever and won't ever curl back off because you removed the metal.

I agree on the piano wire, or you can pick up window removal wire from the auto parts store. Also you can buy an eraser type wheel that will work in a drill to remove the adhesive thats left on the molding, the damn thing works like magic!! I highly suggest purchasing one, but follow the RPM'S that are included with the wheel, very important. If you get the rpm's too high the wheel gets hot and it loses its shape. Just be sure to keep the moldings flat and take your time with them, buy a good roll of 3M foam adhesive tape 7/8 inch wide and you'll be in business!

Something else that may help with removing these mouldings is to warm them
with a hair dryer before attempting to remove them from the car, if the car
is close enough to a power source( 110v outlet). This will soften the adhesive
that you are going to try to remove, as the colder the moulding is, the more difficult it will be to slice through the adhesive with piano wire, or a windshield
tool.
