I work at a hardware store and a customer of mine saw me getting something out of my car (66 with a 289). We started talking and he was saying how I could get some extra horsepower by changing out the spring in my distributor??? I dont really remember what all he said. He mentioned something about different color springs. Anyone know what hes talking about? Or can anyone elaborate on this more?

He's talking about installing lighter advance springs to let the mechanical advance mechanism come in faster. Works some times, but can also agrivate pinging problems with low octane fuel.

It only helps from idle to 3000 rpms in most cases. Your drivability will be affected, either good or bad, and not the peak power.
