Hey all,

Great site you have here. Makes me wish I had a Mustang but alas I just purchased a '53 M38A1 (CJ5) that has a 289 w/ 3 speed that the previous owner assumes came out of an early model 'Stang. Could someone give me some pointers on identifying the motor and tranny. Also did the 3 speeds use a hydraulic clutch? This vehicle is equipped with one and the slave cylinder on the tranny leaks to the point of being inoperable and I would like to get a part ordered.

FYI I found numbers on the top of the tranny: 2803357 FISA

To ID the engine block, look for the casting numbers above the starter.Heads should have 289 or 302 inside the valve covers, ditto for the date codes (cast up next to the valve cover rail inside, it'll be a number/letter/number(s) combo) otherwise the casting numbers are under the intake runners of the heads. Intake should have some casting numbers, if it's a Ford intake. 289's are indistinguishable from 302's when it comes to the early ones at first glance, the small details can ID one to the trained observer (sometimes, unless someone's "stroked" a 289 with 302 crank and rods) No 289's came with hydraulic clutches.

Thanks for the response. Any way to ID the tranny, assuming it's a Ford? Seems to be toploader style. I'll get a pic and post it.

Two basic Toploaders: 3 or 4 speed. They had an ID tag attached to the main case, just behind the bellhousing on the passenger side with a rivet. Sometimes you can ID these with the tailshaft housing.

Definitely a truck transmission. Not a toploader. That looks like it could be a New Process truck transmission.

I was going to say the same. The passenger side appears to have a PTO shifter on it, although it could go to a divorced unit. Could also be a New Departure which are a little less common since they went out of production sometime around 1963.

So I've gained a little more knowledge about my new rig. I found the casting numbers on the block (pain in the a$$ without removing starter) :
C5AE-6015-E and above it looks like 6C2
All the things I've seen online shows the block as a Cleveland made 289 but am I right about the date code right: 6C2 = March 2, 1966
Also, can anyone tell me how to identify the carb? It says Ford on the choke cover.

FYI The tranny is a T-150

If it's an Autolite 2100, the throttle bore size is cast into the bowl, just behind the accellerator pump rod. That will give you an idea as to the size. Most are the following sizes: .98, 1.08, 1.12, 1.14, 1.23, 1.33 The 1.33 is the rarest of the bunch, If I ain't mistaken it only came with the 429 2 bbl. At this point in time yours could have anything on it. If you happen to luck out with a 1.33, sell it on ebay, the dirt track guys pay a premium for these.

The Ford interchange book says the 1.14 is a 300 cfm carb.

Thanks again for all the help. Can anyone suggest some useful service manuals? Hopefully something that deals with the motor/carb/engine electrical etc. and not the whole car.

Well I really don't think you should need a manual, a 2100 carbed, single point ignitioned 289 is about as simple a setup as you can have. If you want a good manual, go to Barnes and Nobles website and look up in the used, out of print book section and do a search for a "Motor Repair Manual" for 1964 to 1970. That one will cover your engine and transmission and likely the rest of the drivetrain in that jeep as well.
