Motor balance help

Ok here's the deal... My brothers car currently has a 302, that we've been TOLD by the previous owner was a Ford crate motor, early 80s vintage. The car has a C4 with the larger bellhousing and flywheel.

He is switching to the MII bellhousing and flywheel setup. For this year, he just wants to install a 92 5.0 HO that he has sitting around until we build his 347.

I know there are two different balances, but I am unsure what he's got to do to use this 5.0, or if it can even BE used with the MII flywheel.

Can someone shed some light on this for me? Thanks!

sounds like the problem I had....50 oz. inbalance weighted 141 tooth flywheel from Art Carr...I just ordered one

A balancing shop could fix it, too. (Not sure if they could do it with just a 50oz flexplate as a reference, or whether they'd need the 1981.5+ crank that requires the 50oz)
Also not sure what a shop would charge for this service. Might be cheaper to order the new one mentioned in the above post.

So is it just a matter of getting a 50oz flywheel, or getting the MII one rebalanced to match? What about the balancer? He is not running one, but has the counterweight from BDS that replaces the harmonic balancer for the 6-71 blower drive setup. They said just one counterweight works on all small blocks. I wasn't too sure of that. Any thoughts?

I just ordered a 141 tooth 50 oz. flexplate from Art Carr $160 shipped. and i paid for 2nd day air. I was told thursday that mine had to be made and it would be out the door monday, this of course before I knew about said title issue, so if this all goes in the toilet I may have one for sale

I'm really surprised Art Carr actually shipped it that quick. Mus thave changed their ways after i laid into them about how long they were taking with mine. Took damn near 5 weeks for something that I was told "on the shelf ready to go" to get. Really p***ed me off.

To answer your question, YES that Art Carr 141 Tooth 50oz imbalance flexplate is the one you need to run that HO engine and any other 302 1981/82 and up.

FYI you can get those 347 stroker cranks in either balance aswell...you probably knew that.

Dano, what about the balancer? Do you just use the OEM balancer (dampner) on the motor and just correct the flywheel? And is it possible to have the MII flywheel (flexplate) rebalanced to 50oz?
