Any of you in the area worried about a potential disaster?

Is an eruption remotely possible? Kinda scary if you ask me.

I saw some (surely overblown & conspiracy driven) TV show recently about the probability for an eruption. Didn't know if it was total crap or what...

There isn't enough left of it to be a concern. Plus, it's so danged far away. Nothing to be worried about unless you live in the sticks.

My sister-in-law is a geologist; she contends that Mt. Rainier is the one that's going to ruin everyone's day when it goes. Closer to major cities and way, way bigger -- not to mention, long overdue to go bang. It could start smoking tomorrow.

Well, as long as the winds stay due south when it goes again, I will be happy. I would just hate to have all of that ash come all they way up here.

They just opened it back up for climbing for the first time since 2004. As soon as the snow melts down a bit more, they will open it for climbers to get an up close and personal check of the crator....

Even the 1980 eruption was not all that dangerous unless you were pretty close to the mountain. And I really, really doubt we are in any danger of seeing something like that again anytime soon.

I'd only be concerned with Mt. Rainier.

St. Helens has had it's day.

....what are you kidding?

I lived through may 18th 1980.

(seeing ash falling out of the sky like snow, and a sky thats grey/black all the way to the horizon is something to behold)

Im not the least bit worried about anything that she's got left... there isnt enough mountain left to blow.

I saw that show too the other night on the History channel.

They were going on and on about Mt Reneir on that show, not Mt St Helens. They're not even worried about St Helens anymore. They did tons and tons of research after it blew to figure what would happen if Mt Reneir blew, and their finding made them realize it would be MUCH worse than they had previously thought if it did blow like St Helens.

If Reneir blew, it would make St Helens look like a firecracker. They said the most dangerous thing about the whole deal will be the landslide of crap coming down the mountain from melting snow, loose rocks, trees, basically anything and traveling for 60+ miles. Too many people built their homes on the lava and landslide deposits on all that flat land. They're worried about them, and the estimated casualties could be 30,000-50,000 and it will travel as far as Tacoma.

I hope I'm not around when that thing goes, it's not going to be pretty.

IF mt Rainier goes ...

Theres more risk of an earthquake causing a mudflow or landslide from rainier than an eruption anytime soon. Any eruption would be proceeded by plenty of warning, since the crater would open up at the top as the magma moved up inside. Just like st helens and just like baker started to back in the late 70s early 80s. Another dangerous volcano in our area is glacier peak. Its tucked away so people dont pay much attention to it. But it's rated up there as a high risk volcano.

She's goona BLOW again and so will Raineer, one will set the other off. According to what you believe in, an Indian Shaman said they were "Sisters" and one would wake the other up. If you think St. Helens is safe.....not in my book, she also said, if you think theres not much left of St. Helens now, wait until she goes again, half of what is there now. Doesn't sound safe to me. Just my .02
Told my Daughter to get out of Federal Way btw.

Indians may be ancient, and wise to boot, but that dont make em right. Sisters smishters. They can blow or they cant. I could really care less about the mountain itself, I just dont wanna see people get hurt. The cool thing would be to see em go though... I love watching nature do amazing and powerful things!
