On the how-to at mustangworld, it talks about taking pictures of your needles while the car is runnning in order to re-calibrate them after the installation. however for their faces, the needles were removed and replaced. I am installing an overlay, so I don't have to remove the needles. However I've read that I should move the needles around to make it easier to lay the overlay into places. Wouldn't that be the same as taking them off completely, so I have to fix them all after they're reinstalled?

nevermind, answered my own question...when you rotate the needles, they go back to the position they were at.

No. I moved them all over when i installed a set of gauges and they all came back into place. I beleive all the gauge movement is more or less computer controlled than simply mechanical.

The overlay gauges where you don't need to remove the needles you can just move the needles around, they will come back to their usual position when you start everything back up.
