Ordered a MSD ready to run dist for my 302 auto. Soundlike you can change springs and bushing to advance curves - just curious if anyone has installed one and what your experience was with changing springs and bushings. Thanks

I have one but I never changed any of the springs or bushings. I tried to understand all the timing/power curves that they supplied but for the way I drive I didn't think that I'd see/feel any difference.

I figgered that the way it came from the factory was probably how 99% of them get installed anyway.

Mudbilly. The first thing your suppost to do is change the springs to the lightest ones. It will make your foot responce and motor revs increase so much quicker. You will definitly notice the difference. Besides that, that was all I touched.

i will try that.............should i leave the bushings the way they are??? they only change the rpm that it stops advancing?? correct???

nevermind, i just reread your post about not changing anything else

Here is a link:
http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/8350_8352_8354_frm23728.pdf

I bought one. It was waaaay easier than the Accel I had.

I think I used one light silver spring and one light blue for the advance rate.

The amount of advance was the blue or silver bushing.

I wrote it down, but it was a while back. It's been running great, so I've had no reason to mess with it.

That's not true.

The springs, which change the advance rate and the bushings which limit total advance used in conjunction with the initial timing you set needs to be taylored to the specific engine combination you have.

A couple of the difficulties you may find with advancing the timing too quickly is that you will either have to limit total advance to a level which won't be optimal for higher RPMs because of premature ignition or advance at that rate is just too fast for the combination, period. That isn't to say it didn't work for your combination, but it isn't advice that will work with every engine combination out there.

Yes sir. Thanks for clarifying for everyone; tune the car properly is most important for optimal performance.

well the car ran like crap with the lightest springs.. ..the exhasut sounded crappy like it had an miss or something............lots of detonation under acceleration

i stopped half way home and put back in the heaviest springs, the one it was shipped with

i probably won't experiment anymore because my car has always run good the way it was, but i'd be interested in hearing what you finally do.

If you played w/the timing a bit, changed the springs, played w/timing some more, you'd get more response than w/the heavy springs. I'm assuming your car isn't stock. It's not really a drop in job. You have to see where total timing comes in at, what is total timing; a slight process. See the 2 posts above my last one for the WHY.

My experience was right out of the box the car drove OK but it seemed like I was draging a house. As soon as I changed to the lighter springs which made it advance quicker, the car just now takes off. I'm running a 302 at about 290 horse.

What's your total advance at? What RPM does it kick in at?

I don't recall what my total advance is.

"What RPM does it kick in at?" I'm not sure I know what your asking? All I know is I hit the gas and the car just takes off. Much better then the Mallory I was running with before.

At what RPM is it at full advance? Just curiosity questions, that is all.

I have one as well, I have played around with the springs and found that one silver and one blue works well for my motor.

However, what I'd like to know (Maybe someone can answer) is how to heck to get at the advance stop bushing? Is it possible without taking the distributor out?
