Muffler poll. READ BEFORE VOTING!

Hidey ho everyone. Once again, I'm thinking of revising my exhaust system. I really like the way the Magnapacks sound above 3000 RPM. Very racecar like. But down low, it sounds muffled, muddy....not clean.

So here's what I'm after. A chambered sound down low. Nice beefy burble. But I ALSO want a good scream at WOT....something the Packs have. However, I don't want an interior resonance. The packs have a drone, but it's not headache inducing. So here are my choices....that I have researched.

1) Dynomax Race Bullets
2) Flowmaster 1-chamber (do they drone?)
3) Spintech Pro Street

I thought about the SLP catback, especially after hearing the soundclip in this thread but I don't want to shell out for a new catback when I already have the Pack catback.

Please be logical, and please vote AFTER hearing my qualifications. If you have clips to back up your vote, please post them.

FWIW, I currently have a Magnaflow catted X and will not change that.

P.S. did you get c/c plate for your steeda sport spring + tokicos shocks/struts? I will be fine without one right? Ordering them tomorrow..

Yes, I have the Hotchkis CC plates. My car sits lower than most, and I run my Tokicos on 5 (firmest). Highly recommended for even tire wear and better handling.

are you saying that you have to get the car align everytime you change the setting on tokicos shocks/struts? I will be fine without c/c plate right?

what other mods have you done? do you have any intake mods? Key to having a good sounding exhaust isn't just exhaust itself if you know what i mean. Adding just a CAI would make a difference in quality of sound (though i don't recommend cai). If you haven't done any intake mod like plenum/tb i suggest you do so.

p.s. spending out the ass just to find the "right" exhaust system ay?

I agree, I don't particularly like the sound below 3k. So I keep it above it, except from a stop. When it burbles down from 3k I like it, but starting below 3k and giving gas sounds crappy. I'm curious the result of this poll.

all the drones are below 3K... but I like the drone.. and above 3K seems to make the car quiet.. so I keep it under 3K

P.S. so do you have to re-align the car after you change setting on tokicos illumnas? I need that question answer asap.. I dont' want to delay the purchase anymore..! thanks

No, no need for alignment when changing settings. I did my alignment once and that was it.

Spending a lot of money on exhaust? Maybe, but I want it to sound just right. Like women, you go through a lot before you find the one that is just right. And it still ends up costing an arm and leg.

I have an intake spacer, and that's it. I would do a plenum, but I have gears waiting to be installed. Also, I want to do longtubes and plenum at the same time. Equal air coming in and out. Not only that, but I feel that a plenum with a bigger TB would need a tune to take advantage of the increased air. The computer won't be able to compensate to maximize the potential of the kit. And if I'm going to do a tune, I'm going to do cams, and when I do cams, I want an exhaust that will sound the best with them.

Thanks spreadman.. but one last thing. I should be fine with stock c/c plate with steeda sport springs right?

Btw, no matter what cat-back you choose.. they are going to have drones.. keep the pack and spend your money somewhere else

Stock plates should be ok. Let the springs settle, and when you go to get it aligned...they do it right....then you'll be fine. If they need more adjustment to get it done, then you'll need cc plates.

I'm not worried about drone, I'm about to have 4.10's installed, I just want to know people's impressions about different mufflers.

Maybe the poor sound beneath 3k is a function of the cats somehow? I wouldn't think so, but with the packs and the Magnaflow O/R pipe, my car didn't sound like that. Sounded very deep and smooth beneath 3k and then screamed to the gods above that.

I'm gonna miss how great that car sounded.

I wouldn't switch mufflers but obviously you feel the need to do so, I've never actually heard the packs with a catted X, so I don't know what it sounds like in person.

mac flowpath!!!!!!!!!!!

should have never wasted my money on crap magnaflows, they killed backpressure and torque w/it, and they dont sound very good, too much like glass packs

It IS smooth. That's just it, too smooth. I want a little bit of snap crackle and pop in there. Not much, just enough so it growls. It's almost all bass (I have a system for that)....I wanna turn up the treble a little bit.

My cams sound absolutely sick with my Spintech Sportsmans. And for those that are pushing the Pro-Streets, I take it you are either deaf or have a stock or catted midpipe. My car with LTs, o/r X, and Sportsmans is cop bait.

I've posted about this before.. but how about putting 2 different mufflers on? Magnapack on right and SLP on left.. or any combo you want..

I don't know about that, but I do know that if you use different lengths of the same muffler (ie a 14" long muffler on the d/s and a 16" long muffler on the p/s) it will kill most of the drone. Thats what they did from the factory on the Lincoln Mark VII with the 5.0L along with tailpipes that were 1/8" different in diameter.

flowpaths are the they have the chambered so down low of course but they scream at WOT. my friend has flowmasters and our cars sound basically the same below 3k but when we mash it i think mine sounds alot deeper and meaner than his.
