Mustang Prices

Hey guys, ive been in the hunt for another mustang, an 89-93 5.0 5 speed. I live in Pennsylvania, and I just want to ask for anybody's opinion about the price of a mustang i found, because i think that the guy is asking wayyyyy too much money for it.......It's an 89lx 5.0, 5 speed, 116,000 miles, graphite blue, gray interior. The mods done to it are, ford motorsport headers, flowmaster catback exhaust, short throw shifter, cold air induction, aftermarket headlight kit, 2 inch cowl induction hood, and a cd player. Clean carfax, and the body is clean, no visible rust, the vin tags are still on both fenders, hatch and quarter panels. Seems to be a solid, straight lined car, no squeaks, and it just needs small stuff, like door lock actuators, window switches, seatbelt and steering column trim, etc....nothing major that I know of other than that. When he told me the price of the car- $7495, I almost jumped backwards. It's at a small corner lot, so the guy really tried to get me to buy the car. Is $7495 a good price for the car, or is it way too high? I personally think the car is worth only around $5500-$6000 at best. Anybody please tell me what a car like this should go for.

i notice that cars are completely over priced that its rediculous around here the car should be in the range you mentioned if its spotless. but im sure someone on here will say that there is a car down the road from them exactly like you mentioned for 10k

Always nice to meet another PA stanger. The car you are describing seems solid although without pictures I can only do my best and imagine. Miles are still relatively low for it being 18 years old. Mods seem pretty tasteful and the clean carfax is alot of reassurance. In PA, anyone who sells a 5.0 fox mustang always wants top dollar. It's a supply and demand thing. Trust me I know all about it. I've stopped to look at dozens of these cars in my life and about 95% of them are priced crazy high. $7495 is simply way to high for an LX with the mods it has. I'm thinking more of a 3-4 thousand just going on your description. Where exactly in PA are you?

Fox bodies are starting to rise in price it seems. Like mentioned above supply an demand... Figure they stopped making them 14 years ago... And to find one in good solid shape it getting harder and harder. Even though the fox body craze is still booming, the good cars are harder to find. And for you guys in the north, bet the prices are even higher for a fox body in good solid(rust free) shape.

$7500 is alittle on steep side,,, Looks like he is tryin to sell the car and add cost of the mods to it. Going from what you say, I agree with your $5500-$6000 estimate.

Come to Jersey, your rite next too it! Just follow the smell! You can get a low mileage all stock 5.0 for that much money.

I live in northern Iowa. Before I bought my fox body from my dad, a guy at a Ford garage asked to buy the car from him for $5000 on the spot, and that was almost 4 years ago. Slowly but surely more and more foxes will rust out, go to the bone yard, then the crusher. Look at the bright side, those of us with nice foxes get a boost in prices when/if we decide to sell.

Pre-94's are getting very rare. When I bought mine in 2001, they were still a daily sight but the clean one's were getting very rare. It took me a couple months to find one in decent shape, now you can find them in decent shape, but if you want to buy them, you will pay for them. Coupes have gotten stupid expensive.

The foxbody is an awesome platform of a car with a lot of capability, but in all honesty, stock, they arn't worth what people are asking. However, if people are willing to pay the money, it would be stupid not to try to get the money for them.

well yeah they are the only real mustangs i dont remember ever seeing a 65 hatchback i love coupes but as you stated they seem to go for some crazy coin, but it seems now a days everyone is trying to make total profit on there vehicles prices are outta control on all the models

These cars (fox bodies) are getting really expensive right now.

Here in SoCal, a decent 5.0, 5 spd will cost around 5k and up. By decent I mean no rust, never wrecked, but high milage with lots of wear.

The car you describe would go somewhere around $6500 here, maybe more.

Wow, I paid $2400 for my 92 GT from a used car dealer last fall. Then I turned around and sold amp and speakers for $300, so I paid $2100 in the end. Mine was totally stock with 130K and just needed a little cleaning. I've already spent more than the purchase price in modifications.

yep when i bought my 93 i paid 5k and i think it was on the high side but it was bone stock and spotless never driven in winter or anything and rust free.

Not too long ago when gas prices were surging, people were in shock, and there were predictions that gas prices were going to continue to skyrocket, they were predicting $5 a gal by now. V8 cars and trucks were going cheap, and people were asking stupid prices for econoboxes. Now things have stabalized, and the prices have also, yes it's going to continue to rise, but not like it was, at least I hope not.

I guess as Myke said, supply and demand. The supply of decent foxes is below the demand for them, resulting in overpriced cars. Otherwise, the fox is in the eye of the beholder, because a majority of people don't like them, or have no apreciation for them, and as far as stock performence goes, give me a break. But some of us still love them....

I remember right after that whole Fast and Furrious movie came out, people were asking amazing prices for Civics and old Eclipses, not to mention the CRX, people who have them, and like them talk about them like they have a Viper.

Just because the dealer wants $7500 for the car does not mean you have to pay that. Of course they have some mark-up built in there. Offer him what you're comfortable spending, leave him your number, and walk away. You could probably get it for $5,500 or $6,000 if you have cash. Don't let him know you really want the car. Be courteous, but firm. Personally I wouldn't pay more than 4k, if that, but then again I don't want a complete stock fox body. And like the above poster, yes the mileage is kinda high - especially for $7500.

The used car dealer wanted $4800 for my 90 LX in 2001. It was bone stock w/ quite a bit of underbody rust, hatch is rusted to hell, faded paint and 120k. I told him all I had was $3800 and I think I ended up paying $3900 by the time it was said and done. That was what I considered fair considering the market.

The dealer wanted $11,000 for my truck. I offered him $9,500; he said "how about $10,000" and I said No. I paid him $9,500 cash and bought the truck. That's what I considered fair for the condition of the truck with Market value in mind.

Hell, I couldn't get anyone to buy mine for $2,500, and I've got more mods in it than that thing. Asking $7,000+ for a Fox that isn't super-low-mileage and bone-stock, or for one that's got some SERIOUSLY major mods done to it (stroked and blown, twin turbo, etc.) is just insanity.

Foxes are a biznitch to buy these days, because they're horribly overpriced, and they're a pain to sell because everyone wants to lowball you (especially if they know what the car's really worth).

Hit up Craigslist.com and you'll find a bajillion 'Stangs listed on there for dirt-cheap, and a lot of guys selling rolling chassis cars or 4-bangers for next to nothing - you'll have less invested in it by buying that and dropping in your own motor/tranny combo than you would in buying someone's "completed" project. Autotrader's not a totally bad spot to shop, but it tends to be just about as bad as eBay for cars that are absurdly overpriced.

I have to respectively disagree. In the last couple of months I have looked at about 15 Foxbodies, and they are expensive. I have met a couple of different guys who deal exclusively in them, and they are expensive! Everyone seems to know they're currently "hot". Even those who have been dealing in these cars for years are surprised at the current demand and prices.

I looked at a 89' LX coupe that was fairly clean, but it was a 17 year old car , and, well, it was a 17 year old car. I offered 4k for it, and he laughed, and said he would pay a 1k finder fee for any car like it I could find for 4K.

As for the Auto Trader, I did find one for $3800, but when I called, he had so many calls that the bidding was $4500. and above.

When you factor in that you want a rust free, or never wrecked car, and want MAS, the perimeters become limited and the prices even more expensive.

Because new cars aren't selling, the used car marked has really gone up, and these foxbodies are no exception.

My car is one of the nicest foxes i have ever seen, everyone prior to me who ever owned it was at least 35 years old, i have all of the service records and receipts for all mods and even oil changes, tires, etc going back to 1991. I have all the original owners manuals, the manuals for a ll the stereo stuff, and the original VIN plate from when the car was purchased new ( the other one that is NOT on the car is what i mean) not a spec of rust anywhere, inside or out, no tears or stains in the interior, ashtray door and maplight both work. I paid substantially less for my cat than 7500 dollars. dealers always try and **** you at first, because there are a lot of IDIOTS that think it's like a grocery store....they just pay whatever the sticker on the car says. When i bought my daily driver, 06 grand prix, supercharged, i paid 6k under the kbb book value, and got almost 4 k over the book value for my truck trade in. It took me several days, and a mixture of some polite, and nearly offensive negotiating tactics to accomplish this. Just remind them, there a PLENTY of fox cars out there, and PLENTY of dealerships also..... Ask them why should they have the privelege (sp) of you spending your hard earned cash with them? I also got free oil changes for life thrown in for my car and my wifes. The more cool and non chalant you appear, the better chance you have of things going your way. Think of it as a game....thats what i always do! Good luck!
