I am helping my buddy do a V8 focus build. The entire suspension is finished, including a mustang 8.8 rear end. My question is on the rear the gear shaped deal behind where the disc mounts is for the ABS right?

Well if so can this be removed and then get a shorter axle to push the wheel inward allowing us to get a wider tire under there.

Not without having that axle shortened. You won't be able to push the axle in any farther because it will be butting up against the diff pin.
Also, Removing the ring is a bear, you need a large press and a nice adaptor or that ring will fold over like a taco shell.
The good news is that Superior Axle and Gear and Moser are two companies off the top of my head that can size axles to fit the application, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't cost you extra.

Wait a minute, upon re-reading your post I'm not sure if you are aware that that ring is pressed on to the axle itself, so if you are replacing the axle with a shorter one, just make sure the shorter one doesn't have that ABS ring on it, and remove the ABS sensor from the housing before you install the new, shorter axle.

Yes, those gears are for the ABS. They are called exciter rings.

What rear end do you have? If you are running a 94-98 Sn95 rear with factory disks then you are in luck.

North Race Cars makes a bracket that allows you to run the Sn95 disks with a Fox lenght axle

http://www.northracecars.com/catalog/brakes/brakes.htm

Basically you would need these brackets and some Fox-lenght 5-lug axles (either aftermarket or off a Ford Ranger) and it will pull the rear wheels in 0.75" each side.

Unsure if it will work on the wider 99-04 rear ends, which are 0.75" wider each side than a 94-98 rear end.
