That's retarded...

A good body man can make it to where you will never know that has been there. And i got news for you, you will notice a new welded in body panel which has been installed almost perfectly more so than a scratch that has been poorly filled.

Oh yea, and +1 for the body shimming and noises coming from the install. My cobra was hit in the rear 1/4 and i got an exhaust pipe rattle that wont go away because of it.

If you're upset about a scratch, you should see what a pony with a quarter being hung on it looks like..factory spot welds disturbed, interior trim that wasn't meant to be removed and reinstalled, all kinds of badness. Plus the body dust from sanding the filler in the door jambs will NEVER be out of your car.

Body shop all the way, look for one that warranties their paint work - no one will guarantee color match (can't paint faded paint) but most shops will stand behind their work not peeling or cracking as long as nothing hits it.

Sorry to hear about the scratch, destructive people suck.

its enjoyable to see the finished product. at least for older cars. others its like ok, but its still a nissan, etc. haha.

i enjoy painting, but getting to the steps of painting, aren't fun. and a lot of patience is required. and if the cars in because of an accident, you can guarantee nothing will fit right especially on the newer cheap crappy cars. and alot of people just want the car to be cosmetically alright, like if they bent the frame they are just like oh well just make it look alright. yeah, because we can bolt a panel on thats two foot from where it should be.

thats why i'm going to school next year for mechanics.

Just bring it to the place that has the best reputation for quality work.

FYI, there is absolutely no rule or law saying that insurance companies have to pay for OEM parts. There aren't any laws that protect you from that either.

filling a scratch has much less to go wrong than a full panel replacement. YES, it is unrealistic to demand a new panel. I had a nice long reply typed, but lost it. i will not retype it.

to answer the OP question. Do your research on the shop you decide to go to. if they are certified by a high end luxury car dealer, then they will probably handle your mustang to your expectations. Those shops take the extra time to make it perfect, with the proper procedures. The Ford dealer may or may not be that shop. the insurance companies suggestions are just shops that they have in their "network". all that means is that the shop makes it easier to finalize the repairs for the insurance company. SOME are great, some are not. There is alot more than looking at a list when deciding where to take your car.

I am an ASE Certified Master collision repair/refinishing tech. The best shop i have ever worked at is not on many direct repair lists for insurance companies. in fact, the insurance companies hated us. we did the job right, no matter what it took to get it done. that is the type of shop you want....one that works for the customer and not the insurance company.

even with our shop working for the customer, you will never get a quarter panel replacement for a scratch. it just does not make sense. logically or financially.

A vandal scratched my car. I thought it was too bad to buff out at first but I was able to get most of it out without going to a body shop.
That's not the case here. But a good body shop can fix it and do such a good job you will never know it. I have a body guy who can do that. You surely can find one too who won't have to replace the panel.

Wow, this kinda blew outta proportion.

There were some really helpful replies in here: SQUEEZE&STROKE, Towelly, highvolts, autumn_again, slow07pony, stangdude2000, bigcat and stanmckinney. Thank you for taking the time to respond with good advice, knowing that having your "baby" mucked up in anyway, no matter how small, is a big deal to the owner. I'll follow up in a week or so with how everything went.

The rudeness by the others, well...I guess that can be expected. Ego.

I guess you did not look at my first reply. After you got stupid with wanting an entire quarter is when I commented about the foolishness PLUS having the entire rear side of the car screwed with.

If you deal with people face to face as you do here, ....no, I won't go there.

By the way, still like to see this famous scratch plus maybe show the reciept for the quarter replacement.

So much bs............

no problem. i can see where you are coming from. this is my first nice car, that every cent of this car is being paid by me. if i wasn't more familiar with a cars construction, i may want a new panel too. i wouldn't want any plastic filler on my baby either. but to put a new quarter panel on, your actually doing more harm then good, and even more plastic will be applied to make it a nice smooth looking repair. paint is actually pretty thick after its all applied on, so after they sand it down to repair it, it will probably be pretty smooth.

just go to a reputable shop in the area. theres a few different ones in my area, and ones actually a pontiac dealership, who i'm going to go to for painting my side louvers and chin spoiler and spoiler. i know how to paint, thats actually what i'm probably best at, but i don't have the correct tools to get a quality paint job at home.

*UPDATE*

I got my mustang back from the body shop a few days ago; been busy at work and didn't get a chance to post.

The body shop did an excellent job, Dub Richardson Auto Body in OKC. I told them my concerns...they explained everything very thoroughly...they even had recently worked on S197 Mustangs so I could see their work.

After they educated me on how they would handle the job, and taking into consideration the more understanding members that responded to my post, I didn't even feel the need to ask them to completely replace the right-rear quarter panel - they repaired the scratch and clear-coated the entire panel..

I don't have pictures, because I don't have a digital camera and was too lazy to go by other means, call BS if you'd like .

Standard repair procedure that we all said would happen. Only negative comments were about you wanting a new quarter. Glad you got it fixed.

option #1
just have them (insurance) pay for the paint work at the dealership then go to autozone and get a tube of touch up and pocket the extra $500

Option #2
Pay the $300 out fo your own pocket to have a body shop paint it, and not go through insurance, because after you pay your $100 deductible and your rates go up, you would be better of paying for the paint job out of pocket!!

Check for a "Colors on Parade" outfit near you. They will come to your house and fix the scratch on the spot (you might even need a PDR person (paintless dent repair) guy to fix the small concave spots on the scratch...they can do wonders and do it right in your driveway. Call some local dealers in the area and ask them who does small scratch work...they will know.
