I have an 88 GT 5.0L Mustang and haven't really had much time or money to throw at it. I am fairly inexperienced when it comes to serious mechanic work. I can do the typical things, timing belts, drive belts, bolt on parts, but lack understanding of major engine/supsension/transmission work. I have plans to work on the car, but really don't have any clue what my goal for the car is since I don't know much about mods and how they affect eachother. I don't think I am intersted in taking it to the track or anything, so most of the mods I do will have to be street legal. Can anybody recommend books to look into that could get somebody like myself upto speed on mustangs and able to really work on them?

Thanks,

Instead of books I would just "surf" around on here and corral.net for a while and ask questions and learn that way...

Alot of guys give really good tips on how to do things and step by step instructions to help you on your way to installing whatever...

I'd say 5spd's advice is prob. the best. You wouldn't believe how much i've learned from reading on stangnet. For a basic understanding of motors, etc, you might try www.howstuffworks.com - they have a lot of really cool articles of how a lot of things work.

I have a book I think called "5.0 Projects." I got it at Barnes & Noble a couple years ago...it's alright, has pictures and shows you how to do a lot of things - brakes, clutches, NOS, shifters and a lot of other stuff. You might just go to Barnes & Noble and look at their Auto section and they should have a few books on Mustangs. Look through them and see if you like them.

There are a bunch of good threads on here, you could search if you have questions, although the search isn't the best in the world. I think the thing that helped me most and still helps me, is learning the basics about how motors work. I also have a book called "How Cars Work" and I got it from www.amazon.com - it's alright and says mostly what HowStuffWorks.com does.

Also, hands on experience helps. Unfortunate circumstances had me replacing head gaskets - I'm actually glad I did it because now I have a better understanding of things. Reading is good, but actual hands on is essential too.

Good Luck!

i would stick to the books, and find a local speed shop that can give u solid advice. this place is good, but remember its the INTERNET.
anyone can come on here and post whatever. this place isnt the end all be all source for mustangs. there are plenty of people that have sick mustangs, and own speed shops, that dont even come on here. so don't believe every post u read.

True, but generally, someone on here will have direct experience with what you need help with. Also, one person might lead you the wrong way, but someone will most likely come behind and make corrections, additions, or subtractions. It never hurts to do some research after reading replies on Stangnet. Books are a great source, but you can't ask books a question. A combo would be the best way to tackle this thing.

Off Topic: [rant on]What's so freakin hard about writing out "newbie" anyway? I had no idea what "NUB" was until it just clicked...and no, i'm not old, I'm 20...[rant off]
