The car was a 1989 mustang lx, with a 5.0 5 speed. It is now a 429 thunderjet, with a c6 mild converter, 3.27 rear gears. The motor is a stock rebuild with the following upgrades: 750 holley, accel ready to run ignition, electric fan, manual rack and pinion, drive belt pulleys, Hooker swap longtube headers, custom x pipe, flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers. The car is very fun.
These were some of the mistakes problems I came across with this build.
The Hooker swap headers were a poor choice. They took about 5 1/2 hrs per side to put in and required further fabrication. I would go with the CPR headers instead. These headers block access to the starter as well as the factory kmember, making a starter change a weekend project. I would deffinately use a tubular kmember and the cpr shorty headers to make a starter change easy.
Also if you get the "swap kit" Like I did from Ford remember the following things
Lokar Throttle Cable and Return Spring and the Lokar Automatic Kickdown linkage. This in combination with an aftermarket shifter will save a lot of fuss.
For the fuel System I would recommend getting the stainless braided fuel pump to carb kit. I have a custom built line with a holley fuel rail and it leaked same with a mr gasket fuel rail, now Im using some custom built setup.
The drivebelt system and the electric fan were good choices as well as the manual steering added room. The X pipe and mufflers sound nice.
I have no Idea why people have 6 inch cowls on bigblocks im using the ford mounts and the factory intake manifold with a Kn drop base air cleaner and I still have an inch of room between the 82 GT scoop and the top of the air filter.
About the air filter/scoop. I often get the question does it have ram air ?, and my answer is maybe. I suppose the proper term should be it has a fresh air intake.
How fast is it ? I don't know. You could have a faster 5.0 with a supercharger. My Answer probably. However I used the logic that some motorcycle builders used back when they tried turbocharging bikes. More power comes from more displacement why complicate things when you could just have a bigger motor. A 20 psi turbocharged 1.6L is just as expensive on fuel as a big v8.
hey there fellow Manitoban. you sent me pics not too long ago. Looks good! I hope to see ya one day at the dragway.....or if you can ever afford the gas to drive to Winnipeg.
well we go by liters which is about .99 a liter where I am, and I think 3.785 liters to a US gallon. So 3.75 a gallon converted at 1 CAD = 0.951936 USD is about $3.57 a US gallon?
17mpg with this car! Next Year I plan on bringing the car to winnipeg. I need some interior pieces in a big way. My door panels are pretty bad, and I need a new tarp for the back hatch, I was thinking a late model restoration black interior kit in the future but I kinda like the 89 Gt Grey.
