I just got my first mustang (94 base with 3.8 v6) a couple weeks ago and its in decent condition it has 207000 miles but has a new engine. I was wondering it it would be worth it to swap my v6 with a v8 and how much money it would take to do this swap?

Not worth it man, especially when you can get a GT with similar miles for $2-3000. There is a lot more to it than just swapping engines.

*2.

If you're happy with the car, and it's got a "new" engine, then keep it and drive it. Mod it if you want to, with some wheels/tires, suspension upgrades, maybe even some engine mods (I don't know anything about this era V6, but there's a lot of cool things you can do to some of the other year V6s to wake them up, and could make your car a lot of fun, and different from all the others).

If you want a V8, then buy a V8, unless someone just gave you the one you have?

well id like it to have more power, its fine for now because i just got it and i had a 4 cylinder for my first car so its a jump up. but i rode in my friends mustang with a v8 and a supercharger and liked how much power it has and want to do the same to mine. But the body and stuff is in great shape and stuff so it could be better and cheaper than buying a new mustang.

It's gonna be pricey doing a swap (as has been previously stated). But if you really wanted to do it, you best bet is to go 351W. No use in swapping in a 302. You'll notice hp and tq gains with the 302, but the 351w is a much better base to work from.

Just my .02

Either way congrats on the new ride!

Apparently my ex-husband made that mistake.

Vortech makes a blower kit for that V6. You can have V8 power for a lot less money if you just buy that blower kit.

Great minds think alike!!!

Wasn't sure if there was one for this V6, but if that's what I had for a foundation, I'd be looking at putting some sort of forced induction on, and making a V6 screamer!

"blower kit" is another way of saying a supercharger.

what else can i do to it to try to compete with my friends v8 supercharged 95?

First, get your car running right mechanically (ie, fix all the little problems with your engine, give it a good tune, service your tranny, etc).

Then work on your braking and handling. The supercharger is the last thing you want to install, once you've got the foundation right.

Finally--from one of the old gray-haired guys on the site: Don't build your car to compete with anything--you'll only be disappointed because there will always be somebody faster. Build your car to be what you want it to be. That's an achieveable goal, even if you want it to be a 500 hp asphalt wrinkler!

I say go for it! I see these cars wrecked on craigslist going from between 500 and 1200 $ max. You could pick up an entire car and just swap everything over. I and Chythar on here have done our share of swaps and it's all plug and play! No hacking required.

On the supercharger idea, I wouldn' recommend it. 94-98 V6s aren't that strong to begin with. 99-04 V6's are much better and can handle the power. Plus, a blower will only get you into a little better than a stock 5.0 HP range and won't even get you as much torque. I've read a couple V6 supercharged stories in the Mustang mags over the years and wasn' too impressed. And the kits are just as expensive as the V8 kits ~3k $.

You can have a 5.0 sitting in your engine bay for half of that, and then the sky is the limit on what you can do. I myself like the idea of a 351 as well, but it just adds unnecessary complication and expense to your project.

I'd say save up about 1500 bucks and start shopping for a wrecked 94/95 with all the parts you'll need. I'm not sure where you live, but here in Jacksonville, there is a Ford only salvage yard (google Rusty Acres) that will sell you every single thing you need to swap for around a grand! That's a great deal IMO. And you won't find a running driving GT for anywhere near that cost.

Kinda lazy right now so I didn't read the whole thread, but my suggestion is to keep it and turn it into your DD. Like everyone has said, it's going to get pricey and quick swapping over. Is it an auto or manual though? If it's a manual you may not need to do a trans swap. Although I don't know jack about the v6.

I agree, if you didn't have the resources of the internet and sites such as this with people who have been there, done that, then yes, it would be a large undertaking to say the least.

But having been there and knowing exactly what to buy and what will work from the existing setup, I can tell you it's not that expensive, not nearly as costly as finding a "descent" 94/95 GT in good shape.

It's no secret that these cars seem to be ragged out more than any other Mustang, not sure why but in my own experiences it's true. I bought my car all beat up with various body panels of different colors, and I paid 1600.00 for it. It was the cheapest running, driving 5.0 I've seen for sale. And even then I had to replace all the tires and give it a couple hundred bucks in general TLC items. So I still had about 2 grand in the car after all was said and done, and it still looked like crap!

You say you have a nice candidate in good shape, so I think it would be cost effective if you can find either a cheap donor car or a complete swap kit to use.

You can use either the AODE or T5 from the V6, so you can spare that expense.

Yes indeed. Those engines have a propensity to blow head gaskets 'cause the head bolts tend to pull the bolt holes up from the block when torqued down. Ford corrected that issue with the '99-'04 V6's and increased the outputs to 190hp/220lbft so it was 25hp/65lbft behind a stock '94-'95 5.0.

I read this as well. I would be very leery of putting a supercharger on one of those V6s.

If you are going to paint it anyway, I still think you might be well served to shop around some more and see if you can find a 94/95 5.0 in decent shape for a decent price.

Then again, the insurance on the V6 model will probably run you less, so there may be some cost savings there.
