My buddy just got a 2000 GT with a Novi 1000 already installed. A few days after he got it, it started grinding when taking off at low RPM's if he took off fast. Over the past month since he bought it, it started doing it more frequently, and occassionally in other gears as well, mostly the 2-3 shift. He knew it needed fixed, but it's his only car and his dad wasnt in too much of a hurry to help him get it to a shop, and just kinda had the mindset of "We'll fix it when it breaks". Well tonight we were cruising around, and the light ahead just turned red, so he pushed in the clutch and we heard a big thump that sounded like and felt like hitting a hard bump. Then almost right after, he started going nuts about how the clutch was gone. A few people came out to help, and we pushed it into a gas station parking lot, and it was towed away about 45mins later back to his house. The engine would start fine, but with the clutch in while the engine running, you could not put it in gear - any gear.
His dad thinks its the pressure plate, saying one of the "fingers" (what he called it) broke off, if not most or all of them. I'm really not sure what caused the grinding, but thats why I'm posting. His dad said that if its the pressure plate, they are going to put the car on jack stands and pull the trans at their house. It can be done im sure, but his dad's tools are limited, and I told him its going to be a real PITA.
Anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be? Would it be something internal or is it the pressure plate like his dad said? If it helps, I know it has an aftermarket clutch because it's stiffer than my clutch with the same trans (T-45), same year. It does not have an adjustable clutch quadrant/cable.
