My original plan was to just leave the car until spring, but since there was no snow forcasted for pretty much all of november, i decided to just go for it.
Since the entire motor was pooched, and im working on a tight budget, i went for a motor out of a wreck, but also wanted to modify at the same time. I searched and searched and finally located a motor out of a 97 explorer with low KMs on it at a local motor recycler.
I cleaned the new motor all up, but decided to not pull the heads, the place i bought the motor from replaces all the bearings in the bottom end as a pre-cautionary, it made me somewhat nervous that they did so, but more on that later. Then i tossed in a Ford racing E303 cam, new FR timing chain and balancer, then topped the motor off with an Edelbrock Performer that i had on the other motor. Luckily for me the front timing cover works just fine with the mustang water pump and other than using a mustang balancer(also ford racing) the motors interchange pretty easily.

Since i was on a tight budget, i tried to dent the stock headers to make them fit on the P heads, but there was no way in hell that was going to work without major re-construction. So i sprung for the un-coated Ford racing headers made for the P heads. Now i know that they are designed for 87-93, but they fit perfect on the 94-95, all you need to do is eliminate your EGR, in my case that consisted of cutting and pinching off the EGR tube until i can get a chip burnt.

Before i put the oil pan on to button up the motor, i wanted to put in a new rear seal, so i decided to pull the rear main cap so i could check their bearing install at the same time, the pics tell the story but man am i SO HAPPY I DID SO, from previous expierences ive learnt to NEVER trust someone elses work unless they have proven themselves in the past.

Now ive never done any kind of internal motor work like this before on anything other than a 2stroke, but i know damn straight that this was incorrect and would cause another major engine failure in a very short time span. So after all my hard working cleaning this thing up and switching all my parts(including new aftermarket parts) over to this thing, i had to wrap it up and take it back to show them their ****ty workmanship. They claimed that they would never send a motor out like that and dont know what happened, long story short i made them put all new bearings in again and i stood there and watched them put it together and torque it correctly, for free of course.

When the old motor blew it broke the bellhousing and the bearing reatainer, so i sourced a new bellhousing from a wrecker in vancouver, as well as a new crank pully and PS pulley, because my ****ty princess auto puller twisted it all up.
At first i couldnt get it to fire up, checked all connectors, had spark, had fuel, couldnt figure it out. Until i checked my dizzy, turns out i had it off by 180*, so pulled that out, got it lined up right and the car fired right up! set the timing to 14* and now it runs like a champ!

I know its kinda dark for some reason
All in all i am very happy with how it went, for my first ever pulling a motor and rebuilding/building a new motor it went very smooth with limited problems. I CAN NOT WAIT!!!! until spring time now to drive it, as i only had a chance to take it for one little jaunt before the snow really hit. It now sits eagerly in storage to terroize the streets once again!!
