Hey guys might sound dumb but for whatever reason my car smells like exhaust fumes pretty bad. You smell it faintly while riding in the car, but when you get out u really smell it on your clothes. Im not sure whether its coming from my exhaust which is dumped right at the rear tires or from the engine bay. The scent is most noticable when traveling at highway speeds, so i think its coming from the engine bay and threw my cowl hood. At first i thought it was coming from my exhaust going into the trunk somehow, but i taped up some holes that the previous owner had drilled (for the rear mount battery) in the rear and that didnt really help any. Any ideas? Car is carburated BTW...

Do you have cats? You will smell the exhaust for sure if you dont run cats, sometimes i would have to have my windows cracked just enough to create ventilation so that it wouldnt stink. this was on an 89 GT with O/R H and flowmaster cat back with full tails

Its from dumping at the rear tire. Put a set of tail pipes on that thing and your problems will go away. That, or drive around with some Advil in your glove compartment.

like mentioned above, it's your dumps. More smelly with no cats. I have dumps on my car and I am sick of them after one year. Plus they make your car dusty as hell. Iam starting to think tailpipes make the car sound healthier too, less drone. Someone told me to angle my dumps 45 degrees towards the sides of the car as opposed to straight down....still has way too much drone, and still stinks. Gearbanger101 nailed it with the Advil, helarious!

+1 on the dumps being the problem. I had a'72 cutlass with 3" exhaust and super 40's dumped right at the passenger compartment and it would make my eyes burn at a stoplight, haha. I'd buy some flowmaster 3" tails and have the shop weld them onto your current exhaust system. Having them bend up a set of custom tails will be prohibitively expensive (at least here in NY it is).

I have the same problem as well, the interior smells like exhaust due to the pipes being cut off right behind the mufflers, a friend helped me move the pipes back a bit further near the rear tires and dumping them at 45's. I bought a new exhaust sytem that will take my exhaust all the way to the bumper with turn downs.

My question is, what's the best way to get rid of the smell that is inside the car ?
Am I going to have to get it steamed cleaned or is there a way one self can do it ? Recommendations for cleaning?

Thanks,
Rat

There's a product called Ozium which is pretty good stuff, it's an air freshener in a can. But if you don't like the smell of the freshener, then you have another problem. Kind of domestic but you could also try Fabreez which you can get at any grocere store. I'd try that, then if that doesn't work, go to a good detailer and have them deep steam clean your carpets, seats VERY thuroughly. Do NOT do the headliner, steam cleaning a headliner could make it sag, I've seen it happen at my detail shop and then you have another problem. Rollin your windows down on a nice breezy day and letting you stang sit for a few hours would not hurt anything either
