Good idea, but I too am wondering how the static seal will hold up to rain & wind. I can't find the static tint @ my local Walmart the last time I checked. I wanted some to tint some windows in the house.

Looks good, but will it stay?
Personally, I don't think the $60 for the www.fordpower.net blackout taillight vinyl was too much...not exactly worth what you get (essentially 6 stickers, but they are precut, HEAVY 3M vinyl that are very sticky - you cannot simply peel them off easily). They are very dark when not lit, but shine thru easily when the brakes are applied. I got busted for my 3% window tint, but the cop didn't say a thing about the taillights. I also did my 3rd brakelight too - with simple window tint. Now that was a challenge to get all the bubbles out! 12 months later, it need to be redone, as the edges are beginning to peel, but, IMO, it's a good look, especially on a blackstang. Fortunately, you can remove the 3rd brake light easily to lay down the tint..so that helps. Here's a pic of just the taillights...the fordpower version. I DO applaude the DIY version though...it's what keeps the hobby going.

Well I decided to give it a try. I bought the vinyl at Lowes for eleven dollars and change. If you did it in an hour my hat is off to you. It took me an hour to get the templates right. Anyway, thanks for the motivation to get me started.

I made them by cutting a hole in a sheet of paper, taping it to the light and tracing the shape to the paper, then cutting the shape. Then transferring it to the tenting.

You can get a piece of paper and trace the existing taillights for a template. I think I may try this mod this weekend for chits and giggles.

walmart no has this stuff here and havent check lowes...what section would it be in and how much does it cost there? Where else might have it? Hopefully its still easy on a 96-98 heh looks killer guys..I have envy! lol

Is that the vynil stuff? how much did it cost? Is it static sealent or apply like regular tint? Sorry for all the questions but I am really wanting to do this to my tang..lol

It is the vinyl, static type, but you still apply it like the regular window tint. Lowes had this for around 12 bucks. I already had some application solution from when I tented my truck windows. I think you can use baby shampoo and bottled water if you want too. They don’t recommend harsh soap or window cleaner.

That looks so good. I've got the stuff that the black COBRA has on my taillights and i LOOOVVEEE it. i got pulled over for it the other day, but i told the cop to get over it, he said he couldnt see my brake lights.. i wasnt even on my brakes when he saw me haha. i told him i had a 3rd brakelight for a reason.. anyways.. Mity2, ur car looks even better with that stuff.. good job!

Looks Great but it blacks out the reverse lights too, can you still see out the back window at night when backing up? I can barley see as it is with 5% tint on the back window .

No problem twogts4uus, I love pleasing other men's wife's........j/k
I found that if you cut about 1/8" inside the line that you trace from your light it will lay down better.
