I think it was that nasty round thing in the front of the engine that says vortech. I'll tell you what, send it and everything attached and I will dispose of it properly for you. free of charge.

That is one hell of a beast you got there. I hope you figure it out, I know what it is like to be stangless. going on 9 months without mine. But if all goes well I will have it in a few weeks.

Lol, I might have to take you up on your offer. I'm sure my nice new Vortech has had a bunch of metal and bearing material circulated through it. I'm a little hesitant to put it on a new motor without having it checked out first...What a friggin disaster this is

Mike what does the back and front on the thrust bearing look like? What do the back sides of the bearings look like? Clean off where the caps sitt on the mains saddles really well and take some pics, also take pics of the caps where they meet the block...this will tell us is the mains were walking.

You can set the blower up on a bench, and feed some new oil through it to flush it out, done this a few times when you take out a head gasket. Also check the filter screen on the blower fitting, I am sure it caught some on the debris as well. That is one reason I like the Self Contained blowers from Procharger.

i hate that you are having problems. that looks like a very well built and taken care of engine. in the top pic it looks like you have a bicycle seat sticking out of the right hand valve cover. did you race a schwinn and suck him up in your tailpipe??

also i have read that the cobra intake is only good for around 350 hp. seeing that you have a good build and a blower, i assume the 350 hp max is not accurate at all. what's the most you've gotten with that intake, just out of curiosity? i hope you get it up and running again soon. looks like alot of hard work went into it. good luck man.

Hey Rick, I'm gonna try and get some more pics up real soon. I'm having a heck of a time getting my balancer off. I already broke my puller on it. As for that thrust bearing, it's down to the copper on both sides. The main saddles seem to be OK, but I need to take a closer look

I might be able to benefit from a better intake, however my Cobra has been fully Extrude Honed, upper and lower. The porting actually cost more than the intake itself. I was making around 418 rwhp with it, and that was pulling out a lot of timing. It had a lot more in it, and I was planning to get a chip burned for it so I could put some timing back in it.

sorry to see that.......however.....you have alot of great parts to work with there.......maybe you'll get lucky and can just do a basic rebuild.......be interesting to see what caused it......

After seeing the extent of the damage, I think I'm leaning toward just buying a new 306 shortblock and reusing most of my other parts. While I'm at it I think I'm gonna put in a AFM blower cam

is that a DSS short block?i have to agree with the mains walking alittle.also if it wasnt line bored properly that could cause it i belive.sorry to see that.that kinda happened to my last motor.the crank wasnt machined right.and wasted most of the bearings.it sucks.

I've had my puller break before... Turned out I forgot to take the balancer bolt off. LOL. That'd be the only reason it'd break the puller.

I wish thats all it was. That sucker is on there TIGHT. I remember that it was a little more snug than a factory balancer when I put it on, but I didn't expect this...

Can't you take the crankshaft and have it ground down?

Generally speaking a crankshaft can be turned, but since this is a rebuilt motor, this one has been turned down already. I don't know if it could be done again. DSS sells their "race prepped" factory crank and bearing kit for $299 though

That totally sux! Youve got a good looking car/enigine combo there. So should I be worried about possibly getting a DSS shortblock? Or is this just a freak accident?

I think I'm gonna chalk this one up to bad luck. Seems to be about par for the course for me lately. I hate to say it, but this latest set-back actually has me thinking about selling my car for the first time in 10 years. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I really like the new Pontiac GTO. I wouldn't worry too much about DSS, I'd probably buy another one. However I think I might have Rick build me a motor this time around once I get some money scraped together. Kinda depends on if I decide to keep the car
