My 93 is really starting to piss me off. take it out and shoot it piss me off.

I though I had rear end play. I would be driving in 5th, give her a shot of gas and I would get a clunk. happens in other gears as well. Rear was totally rebuilt. Still had the problem. I put her up on stands and it sounded like I had a bag of ball bearings rolling around in the engine - My buddy swore it was the tranny. I pulled it and a ford tech looked at it and said I needed new bearings. Bought the kit, he installed them (lots less play in the front shaft). Got it back in the car and the same **** is happenning!

No, the rear is not moving and yes I have replaced the U joints...

Could this be an internal engine problem? Play in the crank? Something?

When you say you pulled it, are you refering to the transmission?

When you say you hear a thud, is it only in 5th gear? You should be able to recreate engine noises in almost any gear (under certain load situations) is why I am asking.

There could be a lot of play in the crank, or it could just be a bad motor mount making the noise.

That still sounds like a transmission issue to me. T5's on their last legs can develop quite a grinding sound to them when the bearing clearances are out of spec. Even though the bearings were replaced, that doesn't assume that the moving parts aren't worn past their usable point, so new bearings may tighten things up considerably, but still have a transmission with out of spec clearances. Take it over to a transmission shop and have them diagnose it. A Ford tech doesn't specialize in strictly transmissions. They have a general understanding of them, and may be able to do things to a point. It's just like your family practice doctor having a knowledge of cardiology, but they're not a cardiologist. See what I'm saying?

Yep, I pulled the tranny and the clunking occurs throughout the gears and the motor mounts are new.

I hear you on the trans and I will take it to a tranny guy. However, I had another trans installed and the problem persisted.

Also, that ball bearing rattling around in the trans is present when she's in nuetral and louder at speed (nothing you can hear driving, I was under the car and had her on axle stands. Also, tranny shifts real nice, no troubles there.
