Hello folks. Just got my first Stang, a 1991 auto LX convertable. I have been into Datsuns for years and built a real healthy one, and had it for 8 years before finally totaling it. It was a 240z with 260 rwhp, and lower gear. At 2400lbs, it was fast little car.
I have always really liked the fox body stangs and a great deal came around so I jumped on it. I love the car, sounds great, handles well, and no top is so fresh. The thing I am curious about here, is that I expected the stock Stang to have more power. I can't tell if I am being over-optimistic, or may there be something wrong with the car. I installed NGK plugs, wires, rotor and cap and cleand the MAS. The question I have here is this, do these cars burn out from a stop? I dont mean power brake. I mean just letting off the brake and stomping on it. I had a 69 Camaro in the day with a 350 and extras. It was an auto and that thing would smoke the crap out of the tires. Totally different trannys too, the chevy turbo 3 and the ford.
The car pulls harder as the rpms climb, but should this 5.0 rip tracks being stock?

Really depends on the gears/tires, my buddies mostly stock '90 gt won't burn off the line without power braking, but it only has roughly 2.73 gears in it, from the factory. If you floor it on a good day, it might bark the tires, but not burn them. With those AOD trans, I've always heard that increasing line pressure will do wonders to it, but never messed with one myself.

Nope. Stock 5.0's were not that powerful by today's standards. And the AODs are dogs, especially with their high gearing. I've only driven two stock AOD cars, and neither would do more than spin a couple of feet from a dead stop.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your Z. You are invoking great memories for me. Those Z's were great little cars. I had two back in the day. (25 years ago)
I had a 260Z with crappy carbs. So, I installed Tri Webbers, cam, header and of course the Monza muffler/dual tips. I spent alot on suspension too but I cant remember the all specifics. Bottom line it ran great, handled like it was on rails and I had alot of fun with that car.
My fuel injected '75 280Z was a "POS", a big mistake and I didnt have it long. LOL

Anyway, if you install some 3.73's or 4.10's behind that AOD you will increase the fun factor by 1000 percent.

Good Luck

When they were new... yeah. Pretty powerful compared the majority of cars they'd be sitting next to. Welcome to 20 years later.

ANY 5oh should be able to roast the tires though. Hell, I can remember laying tread all over the damned place. LOL

Mine is a stick though... Many many upgrades since then. Now the trick is getting it to NOT spin the tires.

It's only an inch or two. What's the big deal?

Big difference in a 260 hp Z and a 200 ish fox with an auto. The good news is you have purchased THE car for buying relatively inexpensive go-fast goodies. It doesn't take a whole lot to make them fun. As mentioned look into gears, and maybe the trickflow H/C/I package for bang for the buck. It's hard to beat.

There's always that forced induction thing too...

Thanks for the replies gang, cool group. I bought my old 240z stock and look into options for power gains. I settled on building it into a turbo 2.8l. Pretty easy build, and a ripper. I bought a 280z two years ago and recently sold it for a good price. Did no mods to this one, too clean.
I suckered myself into buying a cold air induction, probably wont be able to tell a difference but may sound cool. Gears probably the best option, you know living in Cali and all.

Also, I think the thermostat is the wrong one. My car only seems to warm to like 150. Is that warm enough to go into open loop? There is a real slight bog when I come off a stop, maybe running a little rich. Any thoughts?
