HELP!!! how far will i be behind a 97' convertable 6-speed ss camaro? damn i thought he was set on the z28, but now he got this ss lined up...

Still an LT1 convertible, not a stock rocket. I doubt it to run a 13 stock on street tires, prob a 14.10-30 @ 97-99mph

If its a 97' then its still the LT1 engine. They have more power but they are heavier than us. And with it being a vert, it will be even heavier. Before i got my gears and pullies, i could hang with the LT1's as im sure plenty of guys on here will say. Now that i have my 3.73s and pullies, im sure i could beat a stock one.

I have beat a LT1 on multiple occassions. So, thank GOD they are not getting the almighty ls1. Get the zex kit and u will be smoking him.

damn!!!! lol yeah ok ill put 25,000 in my car lol. Anyways, how much faster are the ss's than the z28? everyone says its not too hard to hand with a stock z28. I bet being a vert it will be about as fast as a regular coupe z28. the z29's have 285 hp so it aint that big of a difference i bet some new rims/ tires will help, wider taht is

Seriously, LT1's are really nothing special. Ive never been very impressed with there performance. When i had stock heads/cam with just the usual bolt ons and 3.55 gears my buddies 95lt1 was no problem. i would beat him pretty bad and he had a few mods (tbody, MAF, cai, 3.73 gears, punched cat, catback).

When they do ported heads, and a cam swap is when you have to watch out for them. Otherwise do some bolt-ons and you'll hand them their ass like I do to my bud with a 96 Z.

To beet an LT1 you need to have similar power to weight as they have. they weigh a couple hundred pounds more than you so you only need like 250-260 engine HP. I was able to beet them with boltons and nothing more than 1.7:1 roller rockers to add some lift to the stock cam. If you have a full exhaust, gears and the typical intake boltons you should be able to hang.

just be happy its not a 99 ss that your friend got. mine just got one a few weeks back and she got a good 3/4 of a car on me up to 80mph. she was creaping slowly on me so im sure it woulda been a full car length but that was from a 30mph roll. those ls1's are naaasty. dont think too much to beat an lt1 tho.

id personally get a new intake. gonna run you about $300-$350 depending on how sneaky you get with what you buy .

You could install a 5.14 ring gear and run on 26 inch ET streets. Race from 0-80. You'll top out at about 75 or so .

Like every one else was saying, it's not a big challenge. If you really want the extra power, buy nitrous, then you will definitely smoke him.

looking at the mods you already have, mostly the gears, id wait till he actually gets it and see what he runs against you. probably not that bad.

The '96-'97 SS's were rated at 305hp/335tq (which is fairly accurate).

As with all 4th gen. F-bodies, the higher V8 model (SS, WS.6) is really not any faster than the entry V8 (Z28, Formula, T/A)...most of the time anyway. All your buddy is getting over a Z28 (besides appearance) is a somewhat functional scoop/intake (it's functional, just not very "good") and the SLP 2OTL catback.

A good running M6 LT1 F-body is easily capable of running in the 13s stock @ around 100mph. With a good driver and in decent-good weather.


You shouldn't be very far behind with your mods right now...but that's just an educated guess. There's really only one way to find out, go race him and see where you're at. Then come back and ask these guys what mods you should do next (that is of course, if you lose).

well last time i raced a camaro was a 99 and i dont really know what years come with what engine and what not. when i raced the 99 i didnt know how fast they were and well i was in the 84 stang i had completely stock with about 180 hp and like 230tq well i quickly found out how fast those camaros are. hehehehehe.

lol yeah, i would like to beat him N/A though, but for about the same price as an intake, i can get nitrous.......but thats my decision, i guess the lt1's in teh z28's were rated at like 285, so with the ss being 305 i figure that him having that pig vert should make it possibly as fast as a normal coupe z28'?? anyhow, i just ordered some underdrives, and a pro-5.0 shifter....he was like...oooo you getting scared and ordering parts huh?? damn i gotta beat em, do you think if i added an intake setup with what i have i could own n/a? thanks!
