My friends new PI trqe converter!

My converter has been holding up fine. The only regrets i have is that i wish i wouldnt of installed gears and the shift, kit all at the same time. I can't really tell the effects that the converter had by itself. :Track:

yea but it would have been dumb to do everything separate unless you got the $ to burn

Single disc converters can't be that bad. All the stock ones are single disc, and there are thousands of those running at the track all the time. Check out other message boards sometime. There are many track only high horsepower cars that are running single disc converters. It's probably like axles. Some break at 250 rwhp. Some last forever with way more horsepower than that.
Well, I managed to blow the single disk converter in my car. Many others have as well. If you check the other message boards as you suggested, you'll see others have done the same. As for people running the stock torque converter, you must remember the stock torque converter doesn't have as high of a stall speed as these aftermarket converters, therefore, they don't have to lock up at higher rpm levels after launch, like you do with aftermarket converters. Two, the stock torque converter is 11in in diameter, which means it has a clutch plate that is equal sized to match. Because of that extra size, it has a bit more strength.

I'm not saying you might not manage to get by with a single disk converter, however, from what I've seen, I wouldn't trust one.
 
Propellerhead, I have a Precision Industries single disk lock up torque converter. I don't know exactly how much power I'm making, but I have pretty much every bolt on under the sun. The torque converter still seems to function "ok" for daily driving, but definately slips, especially after the 1-2 shift. It just can't seem to lock it up as it should. I've already talked to dirtyd0g, and it will probably be around 400 dollars to converter my PI single disk to a multi-disk setup. I wish I had purchased a multi-disk torque converter to begin with, because this could have been avoided.

Basically put, it takes a wise man to learn from his own mistakes, but an even wiser man to learn from the mistakes of others. I guess it's up to you if you want to be "wise" one day, or be wiser now.

It doesn't slip all the time per say, but I know it's slipping by the "signs" of a slipping torque converter clutch.

1. When I'm driving around town, with steady throttle pressure, the rpms will drop when it shifts into 3rd gear, but then suddenly jumps for a few seconds and then shifts into gear. Again, this is with steady throttle pressure, and no SES light, no intake or exhuast leaks....nothing. It has to be the torque converter clutch, at least this is my only guess. I'm planning on getting a guy I know hook a scan tool up to it, and see what happens on the road test. He can read if its slipping.

2. When I romp it, and the car goes from 1-2 gear, I notice the pull through second gear is lacking in pull and power. I'm not saying this alone concludes that it's the converter, but I know my car well enough to know when it's not producing all of its power, or getting it all to the wheels.

I see. I've watched a couple of parameters using the Predator. They are based on the flywheel vs driveshaft rotation speeds. I thought you were doing something like that.
 
Well, the only real way to know for sure is to do a diagnostic scan, and check the parameters for the torque converter clutch. However, all the other signs are there, so combine that with the fact that many people have had single disk converters failing, it seems like the converter clutch is the culprate.
