My friend recently got a '66 coupe in bad condition. He just had a look at the insides of the rear shock towers and saw this:

He thinks the plates are there because it's rotted out back there, and he's scared because he tells me he can't think of anyone that makes the rear frame. Is it still good?

Looks like a classic case of air shocks punched through the floor and then it was patch over. It's not that bad and can be patched again. It's also not the rear frame.

That part is reproduced, CJ Pony parts has it with the trunk transition for $250, it also comes with the full trunk floor. I'm pretty sure I saw it somewhere separately, I just can't remember where.

I've seen similar damage/repair when someone runs air shocks instead of replacing the rear springs. Then you have the problem of rust on top of that.

my car has also been repaired in that area because of air shocks. the guy who did the repair welded in a strut rod washer on the inside of the repair area so at least it doesn't show from the outside. but honestly if the repaired area is in good shape i wouldn't worry much about it.
