So im having my stripes painted. My bumper neeeds painting from where someone hit and ran, so i decided to do my stripes. He quoted me 1200 which is the cheapest out of my area. Thats with the bumper getting fixed in 2 areas. But here is my question. When i asked for clearcoat on the stripes he said that it would be messy and that the price would be doubled. He said they are shiny without the clearcoat. is it true? or is he just BSing?

Yes, they will be shiny, but there will also be a ridge where the stripes end. My husband did my stripes. He clearcoated, since I don't like the look without.

I'd go somewhere else. Clearcoat not only gives them the most shine they can get, but most protection, not to mention the "ridge" effect. $1200 for stripes without clearcoat?

It seems like he would just be taping off the car and painting stripes. The factory clearcoat needs to be sanded. The stripes masked and painted, then they get clearcoat over them and adjacent surfaces to blend it together so you don't have a hard line.

The only way I would do just the paint is if I was restoring an old Shelby. They did not have the clear and you could feel the stripes. You will be much happier with the basecoat/clearcoat. I have it and it's sweet.
