Well, I've been doing more and more photochops, both for fun and by request. Imageshack introduced a new feature called a photoblog, so I thought I'd put one together for my photochops. Take a look... Click My car photochop gallery Whatcha think?

I've got several to choose from (ranging from bare bones barely useful to full on Photoshop 7.0), but I'm actually using a rather basic version of Photochop called Photoshop Elements 2.0. It came with my scanner (a Cannon LIDE 50), which was $50. You can buy it separately from something like $50 I think, and I can recommend it as a very flexible and capable, but not too complicated photo editing environment. It's available for Mac and Windows.

That said, you can do the same basic stuff with most of the photo programs that come with digital cameras and scanners. Prior to getting this version of Photoshop I found the full 7.0 version a bit overwhelming and daunting, so I typically used a couple more basic programs. If you're shopping around, my recommendation is that you find a program that allows for creating and modifying separate layers, and it should allow for very flexible selection, including being able to select stuff and then select new stuff without losing the old selection. Oh, and it should allow you to undo each step.

Hope this helps...

Your pic was pretty rough to work with, but here's what I could do with a few minutes time...

Glad to help... when I was doing the 'chop, I thought a lighter color on bottom would work better. Specifically, when I changed the top and bottom was white, it really popped. So here are a couple with lighter bottom colors:

White

Silver/light gray:

Yeah, I thought I'd try it... sometimes it looks great, other times it really doesn't make a bunch of difference. I think the handles would look just fine on your coupe.
