my tach has always had intermittent issues, sometimes not working or sometimes just reading really low. today i take my car out and the needle is just sitting on the stop for like a half hour of driving doing absolutely nothing. i get on it and the needle jumps to about 5000 rpms and just freezes there. i get on it again and it goes all the way to the underside of the needle stop and is pressed there. now what is really weird is if i turn the car off it drops a little like just to the left of the trip odometer, so it is being held up under the stop when the car is running, but if i get on it the needle goes backwards (counterclockwise) to about 5000 rpms. how is this even possible?

is there any way to salvage this or do i need a new one?

is there anyway to get a tach without the whole cluster? a used cluster is 250 and a new one is almost 4 bills! i do not want an aftermarket monster tach. i have a cobra and need the white face gauge

the cluster seems simple enough to oull out. is it easy to change the individual gauges on the cluster?

thanks!

its a single piece cluster, its either all or none. you could pull it out and make sure all your connections are good.

Stock Tachs FTL. Mine goes crazy all the time. Aftermarket cured my problem. I prefer the Monster Tach look though.

just in case anyone has trouble and searches on this in the future, it is super easy to take the cluster out, all the gauges are repairable, and i sent mine to Advanced Auto Electronics in VA Speedometer Repair, Repair Speedometers &  Instrument Cluster Repair - Advanced Auto Electronics, Inc. and they did a nice job completely rebuilding the tach
