My Wife's GT is Sick, Help!

Whats up people, I just joined today to ask the all knowing whats up with my wife's car. It is a 99 GT Auto, the only mods are K&N filter ,Cobra MAF, and a set of Flowmasters. We got back from a trip two weeks ago and the battery finaly died after five years. So I go and get a new battery, replace it and try to start it. I turn the key it cranks right up and then dies, I repeat this 5 or 6 times and it just won't stay running. The only way I can get it to run is to give it gas right as I crank it. When I do this it cranks tries to die and then runs like nothings wrong, Its almost like there is no fuel or spark between cranking and running. It dosen't do it all of the time and I've tried playing with the ignition switch to see if it is the switch not making contact but that dosen't affect it. This is my wife's baby and I have to live with her with a sick car so if any of you have expierenced this please share so hints with me. Thanks in advanced, Josh

Sounds like it might be the alternator. The alternator holds your charge, since you said you took a trip that might have taken out the last life out of the alternator. Take it off and take it to Autozone, they will test it for free. I went through 3 alternators in my old car but I had 2 amps and four twelves in it, so I knew it was being overworked!

IAC --Idle air control.. Its a solenoid that allows air into intake so the car will idle. Its attached to the upper intake plenum and very easy to change. If it is stuck shut your car wont run unless you give it the gas.. They are about 40-50 bucks at a dealer or NAPA also carries them.

This sounds a little different to me but Im not mechanic.

The IAC is a pretty common problem...What you are describing sound like it is going bad. You can remove it and try cleaning it with carb cleaner to see if it helps. THis is just a temp fix but it could let you know if this is the problem.

Thanks guys i'll change it tonight if I get a chance. From reading the other post I believe this is it. Mabey this will help the lunge when you put it in gear. Sometimes it will drop RPM's and then rev up without touching the gas and with an auto it is real noticeable :D

Sounds like an IAC to me too. You can try to clean it. Sometimes that works.

Why do you have a Cobra MAF? Unless your car is tunes for it, you should use only the stock MAF. MAF's do not need to be changed on a near stock car. In fact, upgrading them causes problems with the air fuel ratio. This is a bad mod and may have something to do with why you are having problems with the car now. Put the stocker back on and then reset your fuel trims (disconnect the battery).

definetly the IAC. Mine was doing the exact same thing when i had to replace the IAC.

make sure your intake boot is not loose from the throttle body & check all of those lines that run off of it to make sure u didn't accidentally knock it loose.

i had exact same problem after putting on a mod a while back. just had knocked it loose in my thrashing & flailing under the hood.

sat for a week?? look sometimes when you leave the car dead for a long period of time it can loose the key code. so when your trying to crank it over does the theft light flash? if it does then you need to have ford reprogram all your keys.

Ok Ok get off my Cobra MAF its been on there since 2000 with no problems. I called my local mechanic and he said IAC. I called Ford and it cost $88.26, Carquest wants $59.83, so I will get one this weekend and replace it. I will tell you this, I have been driving her car for three days now and have not had a problem since monday morning. Mabey I blew the carbon build up out :D She only drives 2mi to work and it barely gets cranked before she takes off so I'm sure it has a lot of carbon build up, which is what makes the IAC quit working. But thanks for all of the input I do apreciate it.
