OK...Now THAT was the craziest thing I've seen. Montoya car breaks and he slams into a jet dryer.

If Tony Stewart is called "Smoke", does that mean JPM will now be called "Flame?"

I think Nascar needed that little boost for ratings. They averaged a 7.5 rating during the race but from 10:15 - 12:15 the average spiked to 10.7. Thanks to Juan hitting that truck. I was even texting people who don't follow Nascar and they turned it on for that fire. Most interesting Speed Weeks in history. Danica and Kurt Busch wrecked every single car they entered this week. Jimmie Johnson got dumped on Lap 2 of the 500 and he's getting a penalty tomorrow for cheating (Knaus will probably be suspended too). So much for going for a 6th Championship, he'll probably enter Phoenix with negative points. I may have more points then Johnson and I don't even race. Me and my boys took Thursday off to watch the Duel races. Just a great week.

No. Michael Waltrip was in the negative for several races at the beginning of the 2007 season.

http://www.nascar.com/2007/news/headlines/cup/02/14/mwaltrip.penalties/index.html

His inability to get the car qualified for races and bad finishes when he did qualify left that car in the negative for several months.

Michael Waltrip Racing switched to the then-new Toyota Camry for the 2007 season with sponsor NAPA Auto Parts in the Nextel Cup Series. It was a dismal first year for the #55 Toyota Camry in NASCAR top series competition, as Waltrip's team faced stiff penalties for using illegal fuel additives during qualifying for the Daytona 500. The team rebounded to qualify 15th via the Gatorade Duels, but finished 30th, leaving Daytona with negative driver and owner points (the team's finish in the Daytona 500 earned them 73 points, but the 100 point penalty they received from NASCAR left them last in the standings at −27 points). Waltrip proceeded to fail to qualify for 11 consecutive races before qualifying for his second race atDover International Speedway on June 2. Making just his third start of the season at Michigan International Speedway on June 18, Waltrip posted the team's first top-10 finish and Toyota's third by finishing 10th and leading a lap. In order to take advantage of the champions provisional, Terry Labonte drove the #55 in 2007 at Infineon, Indianapolis, and Watkins Glen.[14] Waltrip gave Toyota its second pole in Cup competition at Talladega on October 7 and grabbed another top-10 finish at Lowe's the following week, bringing his team barely inside the top 43 in points by the end of the season.

The #48 have been deducted 25 points, 25 owner points. So since he finished 40th at the Daytona 500 Johnson does have negative points heading into Phoenix at -23. I have more points (0) than Johnson:trophy:. I'm ahead of the 5 time champ.

the big story of the year will be when JJ wins his 6th title while starting the season out negative points

God I hope not. If you think about it. Dating back to 2005 to present there have been only two Championship drivers during this time-Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart. We need an underdog story. We need more drivers to go on a tear. With Stewart and Johnson running strong early this year makes me believe these are the guys that will win the Championship, again.

No, the big story of the year will be if/when Chad Knaus and Jimmie have a falling out and whoever the lottery winner is at Hendrick gets Knaus for a CC and proceeds to dominate the hell out of the rest of the season.

Jimmie doesn't have five titles because he's that talented, he has five titles because he's got the best crew chief since Smokey Yunick.

I see Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski dueling for the title at season's end (couldn't get any better than that, to be honest, they're the closest thing the series has left to old-school racers), with Harvick and Kenseth as the dark horses.

Well JJ's appeal for cheating was upheld. So now I hear there is a second appeal coming. So Knaus will still be allowed at Bristol. What? This guy has been busted 3 times for cheating and he's still allowed at the track. I'm starting to believe it's Michael Jordan syndrome. When Jordan played if you breathed on him it was a foul. We know everyone came to see him (I was Miami Heat ticket holder back then, watched him put in 57 one night). What happens if Knaus gets caught again, another point deduction? When does it end?

It doesn't end. It doesn't need to.

They didn't even suspend Junior Johnson's crew chiefs and drivers when they discovered that the engines his guys had been running for at least a year were 383cid instead of the maximum 358cid back in the 70s. They'd been getting away with it by running spark plug holes with notches cut in them, then running gasketed spark plugs during the race. Nascar didn't want to subject teams to teardowns back in those days because most teams would use the same engine for 3-4 or more races, so Nascar had a device that screwed into the spark plug holes to measure how much air was in a cylinder. Junior's guys figured out that if they notched them, Nascar would still show an engine within the margin-for-error on their gauge while running an engine that was really 25cid too large.

Most of the rest of the really good ones are here: http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/news/vintage-speed/top-nascar-engineering-cheats

http://www.stockcarracing.com/techarticles/general/scrp_0607_auto_race_cheating/viewall.html

Cheating in NASCAR is actually celebrated by some, as it's this ingenuity that keeps it from being a cookie-cutter "spec" series. The fact that Chad makes the top list with Popular Mechanics when they went all the way back to 1949 to pick instances says something.

Chad Knaus ain't doing anything wrong. He's just trying to play with the gray area of the rules to maximum competitive advantage. I hate Jimmie Johnson, but Chad Knaus is my favorite crew chief.

I understand the grey rule and I know Knaus looks cool to other teams because he's always finding a way to win, I get it. If NASCAR want to be taken seriously as a sport the cheaters must go. If you cheat in other sports you're gone. NASCAR is not praising cheaters but they are collecting fines for their own selfish purpose. I may sound bitter but I can care less. They should put a cap on it. After 3 times the fines and point deductions should stop and you can't run the race. BUT, because people may be coming to a race in that town to see their favorite driver they won't do that.

It's no different than cheating in any other form of motorsport.

Oh sure they make a bigger show of "punishing" teams in Formula 1; but that's all politics anyway. The last time I can recall them either disqualifying or suspending a whole team including a driver was Michael Shumacher in 1994.

Also, I don't think it's NASCAR that has it backward; I think it's the other sports of the world.

Caught using drugs in most pro sports? You're suspended a few games. Big deal.

Caught using drugs in NASCAR? Indefinite suspension, testing the whole time you're suspended, the completion of community service and rehab required before you're allowed to come back, IF you're allowed to come back; and that's all for a first-time offender. Most of the first-time offenders are gone a minimum of half a season by the time it's all said and done. A second-time offender will miss an entire season at the bare minimum, (there's only been one, Shane Hmiel), while repeating the whole process, and a third-time offender is automatically banned for life. (Again, Shane Hmiel.) Nascar doesn't just test drivers either, they test spotters, crew chiefs, crew members, and hauler drivers. They've suspended mostly crew members over the years, but they've also suspended one spotter (Randy LaJoie, who also lost his job as an analyst with ESPN over it), and four drivers (Shane Hmiel, Aaron Fike, Jeremy Mayfield, and Jack Smith) for it.

Cheating is really no big deal in racing.

Drugs is different. You smoke pot in baseball you're not going to kill anyone. You do in race car driving at 180MPH you may kill people and yourself. Aaron Fike was on Heroin during races. Jeremy Mayfield was seen doing crystal meth on the way to the track. Now that's extremely dangerous, it's deadly. They should be suspended forever.

Cheating will happen, I get it. After a certain number you're done. There has to be a limit. I think if someone else is driving your car that weekend the penalty will sink in. Kyle Busch on top of the box the last two races watching McDowell drive his car was priceless. Now that got his attention. I doubt he'll snap like that again.

All I'm saying is, a slap on the wrist and a fine is not working. Take a little more serious action and see if it continues.
