nasty tranny problem :(

alright...well i put in my t-5 about a year ago. it was rebuilt and never really had any problems with it besides second gear grinding at higher rpms. well today i was just shifting normally from the stoplight (i start off in second) then go to third at about 3500rpms. well this wasnt a normal gear (well not a 2nd or 3rd gear) grind. the going into gear grind is very quick and very little teeth hitting. well this was a BIG grind and spaced out. now any time the clutch is engage with flywheel, im getting a nasty whine/grinding noise from under the shifter (im guessing in the tranny). the higher the rpms are, the loud/faster the noise is. doesnt matter what gear im in or not in. when i come to a stop and the tranny stops spinning, the noise also stops.


im curious what happened and am i going to make it home from work tonight (about 10 miles with many stops). i was going to get my second gear replaced during the winter cause its nothing too major and i dont race much from the line due to traction anyways but this noise is like nothing ive ever heard. i started to shake when it happened cause i thought i blew something in my tranny. it still works, makes that nasty hard grinding sound if i try to put her into third (stopped tryin to go into third after 2 tries) but doesnt make that nasty sound in any other gear, just the constant nasty noise. should i drive her home tonight (if she makes it) and try to get my friend to take a look at it (he lives about 3 hours away so id have to take out the tranny and bring it to him) cause its that bad?? it is so loud that i cringe while driving and pray it doesnt break more. please help

i was possibly thinking that because when the tranny is in neutral and i have the cluch pedal down, rev the engine up a bit (there is no noise at this time cause im at a complete stop with the clutch pedal down), release the clutch pedal so it engages with the flywheel, there is that noise but ever so soft. and that is with the tranny not in gear at all. i didnt know if the imput shaft is still spinning and not really touching anything then. the noise is constant (no clunking all of a sudden so i ruled out a piece of metal flying around). im just hoping its somethign that doesnt destroy other things (doesnt sound like its gonna but it sounds like all hell breaking loose when driving faster than 30mph) so i can fix it within the next week or so.
