Need a descriptive answer - tach question

Alright, pardon my ignorance...

The green wire from an autometer tach goes to the negative of the coil. Where EXACTLY is everyone splicing into that at (b/c there's two wires, red and yellow??) And I guess I should ask, which side of the coil is the negative? I assume the positive is the side going to the distributor?

on my car it is the green wire. if you stand in front of the car it is the one on the right.
