Hey, someone with an electrical shop manual for the 70 year, I need some help.

I got the engine and trans installed completely today, and when I went for the big start up, zip, zilch, natta. I have power to the ignition side of the relay, and the coil as well. However when I have the wife turn the key to "start" I got nothing to that side of the relay.

I pulled the steering column plasitc, and exposed the wires running up the bottom of the column. None of them are hot in the start position.

What color wire is the "start" wire? Any ideas on why the thing is dead?

I need to get a ground strap from the engine to the body, but that wouldn't be it.

I am not the brightest bulb in the bunch when it comes to the electrical system, so you guys with the brains in this area, please direct me.

Thanks

Check to see if you have a ground on the wire from the starter to the relay (the thick one). It should have a ground there, so maybe you need that ground strap from the engine to the body. It takes a positive to meet a negative (ground) to make the starter turn. Caution: when playing with voltage directly from the battery, take extra precautions because that's a lot of amps you're handling.

I agree with fastcoupe68.....try bypassing the neutral safety switch and it it bumps then you need to adjust it or replace it.....whichever solves the problem.

ok there are four wires coming off the plug for the neutral saftey switch. How do I bypass it?

The starter works. If I jump the BATT-Start terminal with a screwdriver, it spins the engine. I have no power to the wire which slips on the start terminal of the relay when the key is in the full "start" position.

I am buying a ground strap today, and as soon as someone explains how to bypass the saftey switch I will do that as well.

I ordered a wiring manual off e bay last night. The sick thing is, I bought what I thought was a full set of shop manuals, and as it turns out there are like 3 volums for the electrical alone. I only got one volume with my set...and of course it doesn't cover this stuff.

I think it's the red with green stripe pair.
disconnect the plug from the trans and run a jumper wire across the two wires.[firewall side] one set is the rev lights and the other is the net sfty switch.

Ok I bypassed the saftey switch...natta. The 70 was the first year for the column mount ignition switch...which you can't get. Do you guys think there is a chance it's that?

I get power to everything with the key in the "on" position. All the lights work save for the sportlamps. I have power to the coil, and the ignition side of the relay with the key on.

When I use my test light on the wire that attaches to the coil from the ignition, it's dim. However when I remove the wire from the coil and test it, it is bright.

Any clues?

I just don't get where to start looking since the start wire just won't go hot.
