Need help changing power window motor

Hey guys, my power window motor stopped working today while the window was down. Its been raining like crazy here, thank goodness I have a 2 car garage to work in. Anyway, I have taken the door panel off, but I cannot figure out how to get the window motor out. I can see it through the cutouts in the metal door frame, no holes are large enough to completely expose the motor. I have even taken my speaker out to create another passageway, but that wasnt large enough either. Im stuck...can anyone help?

I had the same thing happen to me. I tried doing it myself, but gave up. I took it to my buddies dealership and the replaced the motor and he said they had to drop the window all the way down or something. He also said that just because it stopped working doesn't mean that it is necessarily the motor itself. Get the haynes manual and it goes through a complete system check to narrow down what it might be. Also your motor might have a hot spot in it like mine did. The mechanic said all he did was tap on the motor with a hammer and it started working again. I still replaced the motor. Just might be a temporary fix to get the window all the way up and it might work for a long while too.

I would try what wikkdgt suggested first. Tap the motor, or check out the switches. The motor is made by Bosch and is pretty stout, so make sure it has failed before removal,.

The motor is attached to those stamped steel arms (called the regulator). You have to drop the window down and detach the regulator brackets (they are riveted to the regulator) and a couple of bolts, and popping the reamost grommet from the rear window guide. to withdraw the whole regulatorassy. thrugh the bottom hole, while moving the whole assy toward the rear of the door. IIRC, Ford only sells the whole assy, and it costs a ton. Plus you need a special rivet tool and the right rivets to get the brackets attached again.

I checked the voltage going to the motor with my DMM, and it does receive +12 for upward movement and -12 for downward movement. I will try to tap on the motor with a hammer. Is there any particular place I should tap?

I just tapped on the motor, and it started working again. My guess is that the rotor and stator became separated somehow. Oh well, thanks for the help guys...

Now be honest, did you tap or did you hammer?

Yeah good job on the tapping. Don't know how long it will last you though. Most likely for a while until it lands in that hot spot again.
