I installed my c&l cai today. I then installed my 91 tune. When I tried to start it it ran for about 2 seconds then died. It wont start back. What did I do wrong?

Could your strategy be wrong?

Im not sure about any of that in that link. I returned it to stock tune and it will start and run fine with the cai on it. I figured it wouldnt run good with the cai installed and no tune.

Ok, if you returned it to stock and it runs fine then don't worry about that link. It probably isn't the issue. Your CAI shouldn't make your PCM too unhappy without the tune. It may not hurt it at all. You just never know. The car just isn't optimized for your CAI. Did you try several times with the tune? I know I loaded mine one day and it got all messed up and took me like 3 tries to get it straightened out.

maybe i just need to load it more as well. i put it back to 91 after i put it to stock and it actually ran, but just not great and the idle was low(300rpm). Maybe a couple more times will get it.

Gosh I wonder what is up. Do you have another tune file you could try? Like a 91 torque or race tune?

Sounds like a corrupted file.

Who wrote the tune?

Brenspeed made the tunes for me. I called him first thing today and he said it was either a bad file, or my throttle body was dirty inside. I looked in it and it was pretty nasty. I cleaned it real good and it runs fine with the tune now. But I was dissapointed after test driving it. I really didnt notice a whole heck of alot more power like i thought I would. Dave at brenspeed re-emailed me the tune for me to try. I may try that after while.

Well, Its acting up again. I installed the tune yesterday evening. I took it out and ripped on it it pretty had and drove it around a while and it never ran bad or through any codes. I parked it, and then ran into town to eat and about 3 miles down the road the check engine light came on and said to check bank 1 and 2 o2sensors. I cleared the car and it set long enough to cool completely down. When I went to restart it it started then died. The it started but was missing b/c it was running waaay to rich. I had to return it back to stock just to make it home.

Sounds like you need another tune. Try cleaning the MAF too.

Id say worst case order a Bamachips tune, I have the same setup but with a bamatune, also make sure you gave them the correct PCM code located on the computer.

Clean the MAF with spray contact cleaner or MAF cleaner. You want to shoot it up inside the small holes and make sure to try and get the inside clean. It's a good idea to clean them every 25k miles or so. Just handle it carefully. You probably have a bad tune though.

Have you cleaned the throttle body (t/b) lately? This may help as well. You could also try a different tuner. Tillman, VMP, Bamachips, BBR (look at Welcome to S197 Forums. The only forum on the internet dedicated solely to the S197 Mustang!), tilmanspeed and brooksspeed (He runs the site ModularFords). I have both bamachips and brooksspeed tunes. Both companies have excellent tunes. Never had a problem with either company.

I think I may have figured out my problem. I told dave at brenspeed I had a c&l street racer tune. He told me there was no such thing, which is correct. So, being as I have a plastic inlet tube I figured it was a racer. Long story short the guy I bought the cai from said it was a street racer b/c it has the racer inlet pipe, and street 85mm MAF housing. I bet thats why my tune wont work with it. I notified brenspeed, so hopfully they can get me fixed up.
