Need Help with Alternator wire

Bad connections = heat, which = resistance = more heat, which =.................

The best connections will be oxygen free. But you should be able to make something good yourself.

Does the cable get physically hot (disregarding engine heat) that you can tell?

You could have a local stereo shop fab up a cable for you if you like. They would have the correct crimpers (pliers are not all that great, though I have used solder and lineman's pliers with success) and cable to whip something up.

The best way to make a connection that I've noticed (just did it with all of my positive and negative cables [battery, positive to starter, and grounds]) is to get some of the copper connectors that are meant to be crimped on, but heat them up with a propane torch, fill them with solder, and while the solder is still liquid, shove the wire in. Once it's cool, seal it off with some heat shrink tubing and you're done.
