Hello I need help fixing my 89 Mustang Lx its a project car I want to sand the car down completely and fix any dents the car has. I know that on the driver side quarter the car was hit into a tree not big at all its on the lip only. I would like to fix that and anyother dents the car may have around. also I want to prime the complete car I was thinking of doing the complete car with primer cans cause I dont have any tools how many cans would it take to do the complete car also do I have to use anything before the primer so that no rust starts to build up? What can I use to take the paint off the car can I do part by part since I drive the car everday? Also I have a GT bumper that I want to put on the car but the bolts that hold the bumper on are missing is there a way for me to fix them and replace it with anyother bolts & nuts. can I bondo some bolts where the holes are? Oh also I wanted to know what can I use to sand down the GT side skirt kits and any plastic parts I heard that paint remover can damage the plastic so what can I use wans what kind of sand paper should I use for the cars body and the plastic parts if anyone can help me I would be so grateful I plan on doing this very soon. thank you all for your time.

You should not need to sand it down completely, unless there is a fair amount of damage or rust. To scuff, just use 220 sandpaper, and for areas that need metal glaze or whatever you are using, use 80. I guess I would suggest renting an air compressor and buying/renting a paintgun for both sandable and the epoxy primer. Does the GT bumper match up properly with the LX? I thought that you need the ground effects pieces behind the rear wheel for it to look right. I will just assume you have a plan for this. You can install small brackets with carrige bolts or some such thing on the backside of the bumper, and that should do. Carpet trim might work. If you are not experienced with auto body, then I highly suggest you get in contact with someone who is to help you with this project before you even begin.

I'm sorry I did not really say everthing that i'm trying to do to the car I have the complete GT kit already the only thing is that the front bumper is missing the bolts that hold the bumper in place So I was just wondering what I can do to fix this so that I can mount the bumper in place and not have it fall So I will be converthing This LX to GT thats what I want to do but I want to also fix any dents the car has around it I want to sand the car down and prime the complete car. If I drive the car everday would it be a good idea to do it peace by peace? I dont know if I got the answer for what I should use the take the paint off the car if now please let me know and do I have to put anything befor the prime so that I dont get rust? Also what do I use the sand down the Ground FX cause I heard that paint remover will damage the plastic. Thank you for your time & help.

For your bumper troubles.. all the bolts that mount the bumper are the same, so take the fastner you already have, make a trip to the hardware store, and ask to have x many of the same bolts. They will give you identical pieces, so you can bolt your bumper cover up proporly.

You say you want to body work your car piece by piece, while your driving it every day? I really doubt thats going to happen, it will rust very easily.

Not sure how to prep urethane (your stock bumper covers and side skirts are made of urethane), but i would imagine that you would be OK to use a high grit sand paper on the pieces.

You will find out once you get into it, that your plans are much easier said than done.

I just found a paint remover that will work on rubber bumpers.

Its called REMOV ALL Stipper, I found it at a Auto Body Supply Store. It states that it is for Most Surfaces Including Steel, Aluminum, Chrome, Alloys TPO Bumpers, Rubber Seals yada yada yada.

I asked what TPO Bumpers were and they said rubber bumpers.

So I will be using it this weekend on my 90 GT Bumper where it has been bumped and the paint is all cracked up.

You can just sand the bumpers and ground effects just like any other piece on the car. No need to strip them down to the original urethane. Just scuff them up good. I primed my ground FX with a primer that was made for flexible parts -- regular primer might work OK, but I dont know for sure.

If you don't take the car down to bare metal any primer is fine, The old scuffed paint makes the best surface for the primer to stick to. When you take it in to have it painted they'll shoot another coat of primer on before painting anyway. If you take it down to bare metal you should use a good epoxy primer, they tend to be more expensive though. If you don't, I would at least recommend getting some of that rust stopper stuff and spraying down any bare areas with that. Hate to see the paint start bubbling on you after all the work you're soon to be doing. If you run into any trouble feel free to PM me, good luck
